    browsing the web in college here it got me wondering what the max speed is. Got this test in Google.

    http://www.numion.com/MaxSpeed/index.html

    i think its a good result. 8Mb seems a lot anyway. What is broadband equivalent to?

    I just did the test and got 1.15 magabit/sec download and 152.75 kb/sec upload. Im on 1.5meg NTL(I hope I got upgraded for 1meg to 1.5meg) Those results seem okay for what I should be on?

    8meg is pretty class :D

    those results seem good for that line.

    i've noticed that downloads somethings go way over the 1MB per sec mark (sometimes 2 or 3MB per sec). Often when i get stuff off Microsoft its VERY fast.

    how is this possible?

    It's possible with compression to get very nice download / upload speeds. Your actual speed hasn't changed, but you do get an effective speed above your max.

    HTH.

    i have 1mb at home but i get 700kb/s sometimes when i use flashget
    chorus connection is weird at the best of times

    in UL when i went there it was 10+ mbit probably 100mbit or something which was
    probably throttled

    i have friends in sweden who host ftps who have 300mbit in their bedroom
    bastards! :D

    ive got a 1.1mb line

    but my silly isp sometimes screws up and i can get away downloading at 2mb/s for a while..ok so its only a few seconds but it gets me to 10mb a lot quicker than at 130kb/s :p

    I think most colleges are T3 connection. I've had downloads in my college above 8mb when it wasn't busy.

    Most standard twisted pair broadband lines are capable of a lot more than what the companies offer. The lowest being 512 and the highest being 2mb but if the line quality is good it's capable of 9mb/s or higher.

    Because download speed is misreported in most internet browser apps. For example, click to download a 50mb file. Wait for a few mins, THEN choose the save location. You will then see that you're downloading at a whopping 5megabytes (not megabits!) a second!

    Na higher then that as far as I know UCD are ( or where last year anyway ) on OC-3 or 155Mbps. Even if there was no-one else on the internet in the entire college you would still only receive a fraction of the full bandwidth that's there. I'd say most major educational institutions would have the best bandwidth available in the country,
    they need it.

    If you want to see exactly what type of connection a particular college and it's utilisation has look at the HEANet Network Map.

    The NUI colleges have one connection between them. Every connection in any college in the country is capped in some respects imo. Best connection i got was in Tralee with a meg a second. The other places dont allow any sort of downloading. Im in UCC at the moment and they have a thousand odd computers at least so unless people are stupid they must have something massive. University Of Limerick has the best connection in the country. The guy who created Linux spends a substantial part of his year in UL...

    download: 7.7Megabit\sec
    accuracy == excellent.

    upload ==3.49MB\sec
    accuracy == good.
