Well, at least they can't be accused of using the "kiddie image" of Nintendo this time around...

Its not clear if all the images are nintendo or one of the other media groups that know whats going on. The last pic there is a failry obvious photoshop job.

    Sounds very cool:
The DS could act as both a wireless 802.11 device and as a repeater hub. In other words, you won’t need a wireless router nearby to get online with these things - you’ll just need someone close enough to connect to, and he’ll be able to connect you to someone just as close to him even if that person isn’t so near you, and so on. Potentially-huge networks of gamers could appear organically and play against one another regardless of pre-installed routers or proximity.

I'd love to see that in action, if it really did have this feature you could definately see the ds becoming the best thing to have on the way into school/work in the morning. Can you imagine? On the way home there'd be a big war game of some kind going on. Excellent.

Yeah but what they are talking about is a big Ad-Hoc or Mesh network and there are big routing issues with those types of networks. Think about it, your bouncing through sombody else and they turn off the their DS how is the system going to cope? Also the added processing and wireless traffic will screw the the CPU and the battery. So dosn't look good for that theory. Still on a small scale it could work out.

You're absolutely right. it definately is fanciful thinking at the moment whats been suggested on a scale any larger than a few people.

I think the idea of being on the bus etc. and doing the equivalent of bluejacking with your ds and finding someone to play with is a definite innovation thats been waiting to happen properly for a good while.

there's an announcement on teamxlink's website (link) about their support for Nintendo DS wireless gaming.

if you're not familiar with xlink kai, it's simply a replacement service for Xbox Live for those with modded xboxes. it lets you connect to other people's modded xboxes through the system link options in many games that have the feature eg: halo, pgr2, star wars battlefront, etc. they also support PS2 and Gamecube, although those arenas are always empty :)

so if you have a wireless router in your home, and a nintendo DS, you would be able to play LAN games such as GT4 which have no confirmed online play. lets hope it works out. cant wait for this either, with its touch screen, a mod, and some crazy hacks released in the community, the DS will likely to become a far more powerful device then just a simple gaming platform. word.

Yeah, these were the things that screwed parasitic networking (as they once called it) in mobile phone land. Still, interesting idea if they found a way around it and solved the obvious routing problems - I was thinking of doing a paper on it six or seven years ago but never got off my lazy ass.

Well at least the DS will do that. It sleeps till another DS comes in range then wakes up and alerts you. You go in to picto chat with that person and you can decide to go in to a game from there. Its very clever and will add to the vaule of the DS big time.

The support for internewt play via WiFi is cool but everyone keeps saying how you will be able to use hot spots to play. The problem is most comercial hotspots require a web browser to be able to join them (log in to them) so it may rule out those for DS play and VoIP.
