I've been there - also to Crete and Rhodes, and to be honest I'd recommend either of the other two above Zakynthos. I went there 2 years ago and after the middle of September it's dead. Also seems very popular with the 16 year old English element - whereas in Crete and Rhodes the more English oriented resorts are separated from the Irish oriented ones. There's not a huge amount to do, and it tends to rain quite a lot in Sept. Rhodes is further south and hotter for longer

ACtually Rhodes was probably about my best greek holiday - a little bit of culture and lovely restaurants in Rhodes town - great bars and nightlife - great jewellery, I found it cheaper than either Crete or Zakynthos. We stayed in Kremasti which was a bit out but taxis dirt cheap, had a great time. Friends of mine went bavk to the same place last week and loved it. Oh yeah and lots of shoe shops for the girls.

The other places I'd recommend would be Turkey (great for a week but personally I wanted to start up a women's lib movement after two weeks) and Malta which was fab. Cheap. But also a bit more cosmopolitan.
