This seems out of place on this guitar based board, but hopefully there are some pianists out there!

Can anyone recommecnd some nice piano pieces to get working on,im board/finished with anything i have at the mo and i need some more. Im useless at finding my own, as i have to hear anything to get the jist of it.Im doing grade 8 so im up for anything, as long as its not a hungarian rhapsody sort of affair.

Anyway, they can be anything, jazz, movie, classical etc etc.

    Thanks

I did notice the complete and utter dominance of guitar/bass/drums on this board, too. Anyways.

Hmm... most of the piano music I like is in songs, and probably too easy for you because the only music I notice as "hmm, piano music, nice to play" is easy, 'cause I suck. =P I've always liked Hallelujah from Shrek, and the start to The Sacrament by HIM has a nice piano bit, too.

You may have more luck in the classical forum, I know this is supposed to be an instruments board, but they may know some.. classical piano pieces which are nice. :)

I'm working my way through Beethoven's complete Sonatas at the moment, I'm sure you've already done one or two of them on the way to your grade 8. Some of them are unbelievably difficult, but well worth slogging through. Im my opinion the Sonatas are perfect piano music, it doesn't get any better.

By the way, John O'Connor is performing the entire suite of the Sonatas at the NCH between now (last night, I only found out today) and next May. You should definitely go to see some of these concerts.

I was also going to suggest some Gershwin, but you said you don't like Rhapsody in Blue...heh. [EDIT]actually, you said Hungarian Rhapsody, lol, so try Gershwin then![/EDIT] Other faves of mine are Liszt and Debussy, but again I'm sure you've already played some of that stuff.

For jazz, my favourites are Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk. There's plenty of scored stuff from Joe Sample around too, if you prefer mellow stuff.

For good pop/rock piano playing, I listen to a lot of David Paich (Toto) and Jay Oliver (Dave Weckl band, actually more jazz fusion then pop/rock).

Im half way through the first movement of a beethoven sonata. pathetique i think its called. fcukin great peice to play especially if you like really hammering the piano and also playing in excess of sixty-four note bars. Another really sweet peice which I did for some exam a few years back is tristesse by chopin. It was the sole greatest influence on my piano playing. To play it you have to be able to play chords and melody at the same time with just one hand. And if you get it right (I probably cant anymore) it sounds fantastic.

Anything by Debussy, though some of his work is just ridiculously hard. And if you really want a challenge try Rachmaninov. Chopin etudes aren't too bad either.

beethoven pinao sonata no. 18 'moonlight'.... 3rd movement presto agitato..

    *cough* good luck with that...

    Never liked the moonlight sonata.

Rach pieces are great fun. As long as you've got a few years free to put into them. Can't say I ever did. But when they're played right they're unbelieveable.

Try and track down some 80's cheese rock and hair metal and maybe some black metal. They're not classical but hey!

Van Halen - Jump has a nice keyboard solo as does Children Of Bodom - Children Of Bodom. Dare I say it... Cradle Of Filth has some interesting stuff too.

Dunno if you'd laugh at all that but if you're open for suggestions it's something different that the average piano teacher wouldn't go near!
