    heh..very cool.
I dunno, I suppose they could be weather balons, if they were metallic they could just be reflecting the orangness of NYC

they could be some form of satellite, y'know how NYC is, there are so many security concerns there right now, God only knows what they have in the sky keeping track of whats going on below.

My dad took pics years ago and they are very similar, he always felt that what he saw were UFO's (literally unidentified flying objects), he saw two objects zooming across the sky doing strange things, flying in peculiar ways and he took lots of photos on timer so he caught several frames per second. In each frame the objects manouveres became obvious, gaining great distances within miliseconds on film. (was in the 70's)

But I don't rightly know, lately in the states there has been a huge increase in unusual sightings, perhaps it is down to the higher security which has been put in place...

    The truth is out there

well maybe they aren't weather ballons, but some sort of security ballons ??
tracking devices perhaps, is why there would be so many of them, or maybe they have something to do with the air traffic overhead, maybe markers or guidelines for the flightpath.
The latter is very feasible solution. Would also explain why they are orange, makes them more visible for pilots.
(sure they don't want anymore planes flying into buildings over there)

Maybe they were just normal helium balloons! Some kid in Central Park let go of 3 of them at the same time. It can be difficult to grasp the scale of something like a balloon in the sky, because you have no background to scale it against. The objects may have been closer than they appeared, making them appear bigger.

    I like my explanation better.
(even though yours makes more sense)

I'm sure they don't, I'm equally sure they wouldn't want planes flying into overhead markers :D The same goes for weather balloons, I can't see any being launched anywhere near a flightpath.

My guess would be a twin engined military aircraft on afterburner, probably a national guard F-15 either patrolling, practicing intercepts or perhaps after escorting a plane in, does anybody know if there was any alerts that day ? I was in Boston for 911 and we could see them patrolling overhead at night, they looked similar enough to that, afterburner would make them visible in the day aswell, and zooming in and enhancing the picture it looks like there could be 2 distinct dots. If you want to send the higher res image to steven_mu at yahoo dot co dot uk I might be able to get it clearer.

I can only actually spot 2 objects in the picture but you're right that military flights are usually in groups of 2. The obvious exception would be training and certification flights where there could be a flight of two aircraft in formation with a third aircraft in close to observe.
