System Idle Process using 99 CPU - right or not?

Wondering if anyone could check your task manager and tell me if it's normal to have System Idle Process using 99-98 of your CPU constantly? I don't know if that's a % or not but I'm trying to stop my HD from working away (see post below) and this seems somewhat 'interesting'. Problem is it won't let me end it? Not a valid request.

    Anyone explain this to me?

    Thanks in advance.

The idle process isn't a process like others. If it's running at 99%, it means that your CPU is 99% free for other programs to use. Check the performance tab in task manager to see actual CPU usage.

Yeah, there's no problem there. It's not doing any work on the hard drive.

what is it exactly are you trying to end?? 99% are you talking about CPU usage in task manager under Performance? if thats where you see 99% then something is not right! if I dont touch my PC at with no program running, just the usual services and whatevers loads at start up, my cpu usage is at 0%, sometimes it moves between 2% and 0% as it is on you know! but I cant say rather your system is doing something funny or not cause I'm not sure where you reading that 99% from! but if you are reading that 99 from task manager under processes and not under performance cpu usage, like Khannie said already, you have nothing to worry about, in processes system idle process at 99 meaning you have 99% usage at idle, not doing nothing another word, and in performance cpu usage it will show 0% 1% or 2% max if you dont touch your pc with no program running! hope you're reading it from processes tab not performance tab!

I'm reading it straight across inside the performance tab...ie The system is 99% free. Unforuntely for me this isn't great news because I'm trying to work out how to stop my laptop from working away continusiously doing nothing. Here's the thread:

Looks like my poor HD overheated and is now seriously hurt. I was clutching at straws trying to see was something running in the background causing it to act so.

    Thanks!

man your laptop has more than one issues?
combining your 2 posts toegether I think your hdd isn't doing anything, its just trying to keep spinning but its getting to a stage that is close to a break down!
