Has anyone bought the 100 pack of DVD's for 50 euro from Maplin.

    Whats the quality like?

I wouldn't touch them until i could find out what type of DVD's they are. What i mean by that is who manufactured them. Are they RICOH or PRODISC R02's or what. That is the only quality indicator for DVD's.

Its quite possible they are el-cheapo, and might even be princo (shock and horror). Princo=piles of steaming dung.

They're Hi_Space. I've copied a couple of movies onto them with no problems.

I got the - ones as that was all they had in stock at the time but they do + as well. It actually doesn't say what speed they are and I didn't really look when I was copying - I tend to kick off the copy and go back to watching tv :).

I bought a pack of the - ones last February. They didn't work on my Mac. I brought back most of them and they replaced them. The replacements didn't work. I brought them back in May (the unused ones and the ones that had failed, in both cases, btw), and the Maplins guy said one of the staff would "test them out on his Mac, because if they work on his Mac, then it must be your Mac that's at fault".

He said he'd call after the weekend. Never did. A couple of weeks later I went in, and he was really rude. He said that the DVDs had worked on the Mac they tested them on, therefore my Mac was at fault

By now I'd bought DVDs in Compustore and they had worked immediately, perfectly, without exception and without trouble. So I said that obviously the problem wasn't with my Mac but with the incompatibility; Maplins had sold me "unwarrantable goods" (goods not suitable for the purpose for which they're sold) and so should give me my money back.

He refused, but said he'd call me back after consulting his bosses. I didn't hear for a couple of weeks; went in again, accompanied by someone else who said "Why don't you just give your customer the money back and have a satisfied customer? It's obvious that this is not a complaint being brought in bad faith" - or words to that effect. They said they'd ring me Monday.

Not a word from that day to this. I've never shopped there since, and have stopped recommending them to my friends.

Originally I intended to write to the boss of Maplins worldwide about this, as an example of the kind of customer care no one should expect. I decided not to - after all, if they don't know their staff...

So good luck with buying your DVDs there. I certainly will never buy anything there again.

everyone kinda forgot to look at this DVD-Rs in a way CD-R used to be when they first came out tho, remember when CD-R first came out, we all had the same problem, some CDs are ok and some are not, as well as the quality of the CDs (DVDs), support from the drives also comes in to question, DVD R aint mature yet, same goes for CDR at the start, soon it be all gone and we can just buy any cheap discs to use without problems! for now, stick with what works best for you! buy small amount and try them out first! thats my only suggestion!!!!

I agree. The way I looked at these ones are that even if 20 of them fail it's still 80 for €50 - damn sight better than €2 each.

I'd be wary of buying the unknown brands in maplins myself, if I was buying a lot of them.

Got the +Rs, and no problems so far either with data or playing movies on a stand-alone player. I'd buy more if they had 'em.

I got the "8x PRODISC R03's" from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk for 13eur per spindle of 25. I can guarantee that those are ubergood quality, and you wont get costers using those.

For those of you who have the maplin media, throw a disc into your drive, and run this prgram, and tell me what the media code/manufacturer id is.
