    Hi,

Has anyone used the Ink refill kits for your printer? Are they worth it or are they more trouble than theyre worth?

I recently bought a Dell A960 and I found out that a single black & colour cartridge replacement costs a whopping €75.50!

Then I found a Refill kit for the A960 on ebay for about €15 which should provide up to 4 refills.

Would like to know what you think..

    Thanks.

Speaking as a guy who does a lot of printer repairs, its a yes/no answer
Normally I would go for unbranded rather than refills, mainly because I have seen refills cause a fair bit of damage to printer heads over the years. One of the reasons I like canon is that you can swop in and out a new head.
I feel sorry for ya after buying one of those Dell yokes, Dell sure have the people by the short and curlies, I have a mate who bought an AIO 920 and the drivers wont install succesfully, (not much point having an AIO if you cant scan or copy) and the cartridges are titchy. The worst thing is that it is actually a rebadge lexmark, but lexmark cartridges are two small.

    Anyway i digress.

My rule of thumb no more than two refills per cartridge after that you are running the risk of damage to print head

I would have said yes, go with refils. I used to use them all the time on my old HP 820 Deskjet. But I tried some refils on my new HP PSC 2175 All-In-One, and the ****ING black ink has not worked since. Apparently its a fault with a microchip on the catridges ?

Nice one HP - terribly sorry for trying to recycle !!

Surely if you were "a guy who does a lot of printer repairs" you would know that HP and Lexmark (Dell) have the print head built into the cartridge.
Therefore there is no risk of damage to anything more than the cartridge.

Epson and Canon are different in so far as they have the print head in the actual printer.
You are correct to say that on most Canons the head can be removed and replaced with ease. Epsons heads are pretty well fixed though.

    Gahh!
Sorry your right my mind was elsewhere, apologies, I was mainly thinking of Epson, rather than Lex, twas the last one I worked on that had the problem.

With HP especially with the newer printers, they are a curse for rejecting cartridges that have been refilled.
Anyways I specialise in lasers more than inkjets ;-)

Yup, I should have mentioned that some of then manufacturers (epson for sure) use a chip to track ink usage and will refuse to print when a certain quantity of ink passes through them.
This I believe is being examined by some EU people as it is both anti competitive and bad for the environment (as more cartridges are used).

Just as a note to others,
Normally if you have the options to go for non branded or a refill, personally I would go for the non branded, for example qjet who afaik actually manufacture proper canon cartridges, sell non branded canons, which are as good. I think they also do epson.

    just my 2c

Did you know that retailers make 55-60% profit on every printer cartridge they sell you!

Maybe on branded ones, but I sure dont mind paying 12 euro for a qjet cartridge when the refill is about 8 euros, and the canon cartridge is about 20 euros,
But then again I saw a 24 black for HP the other day and it was like 48 euros (incl)! I checked the trade place, and they were looking for 24 euros plus vat
at that price I feel sorry for ppl with HPs

That's actually where HP makes most of its money, believe it or not.

I am stuck with Dell too but in fairness to them the cartridges really go a long way. They are kinda pricy but IMO they are worth it

Anyone spending more money than EUR20 on a colour cartridge is getting ripped off. Its as simple as that. If you're paying EUR75 per cartridge, you may as well just write me a blank cheque, i can make better use of your money.

For the same price as just TWO of those 75eur cartridges, you can get a nice R200 photo colour printer from epson from blankdiscshop.co.uk

Then for the price of just one more cartridge for your printer, you can get 4-5 sets of colour cartridges, and a few black ink cartridges from the same company. Of course, its all up to you to decidei f you'll ever use 3 more cartridges :p
