does anyone know anything about them. I am a computer stupid and this will be my 3rd computer. so I dont want to get it wrong again.
I also want to get ms word which is not included in this computer. is it very dear to buy? and finally, what is so good about pentium 4 would i need it.
sorry for being so ignorant but i really need impartal help.
    thanks

the general response from here would not to buy a pre built computer, instead spec your own and build it - saving money. Its up to you, but it is considerably cheaper, especially if you have a screen from the last computer!

Pentium 4's are good for encoding, and alright for games
AMD64's are good for games, alright at encoding.

Durons (&Semprons) and Celerons are all budget chips which offer less L2 cache then their higher-end chips. They are general ok for internet surfing / word processing but not good in anything that requires decent computer usage (games, graphics programs etc).

Tell us what you use your computer for mostly, and someone will post up spec's they'd recommend. I, personally, have never heard of "iqon" computers before.

    1.Whats your budget?

2.What do you want to do with your shiny new PC?

3.Consider Open Office as an alternative to word? It's free, about a 85mb download off the net and is, mostly, compatible with MS office. MS office is VERY expensive to buy. You might be able to get a student discount is a good bit cheaper(or so i am told).

4.Why iqon computers? Why not dell or PC world. They are at least based in this country and prob easier to buy from/ get stuff shipped from them.

    5. If you are as you say "computer stupid" then deff buy rather than build. Ignore anyone else telling you otherwise. Unless you have a burning desire to build that is.

    6. If you have a deacent monitor from one of your older computers see if you can but a new one without a monitor. Will usually save you a €100 or so.

    7. Are you going to go laptop or PC?

Just out of curiosity is there anything particularly wrong with the other two, if you're just using them for word and internet and stuff there's probably not much of a need to upgrade.

iQon are a computer company that are based in Dundalk. The manufacture their pcs in dundalk, so you are buying 'irish' to coin a phrase. They are decent enough pcs for the home user who just uses their pc for internet, word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia etc...

They wouldn't be really suitable for high-end gaming or anything like that...

You'll usually get decent enough value from iQon as well....

If its just for general use, then you can go wrong with an iQon machine. I've dealt with them for a few years when I lived and worked in Dundalk and I never really had any problems with them. They were always helpful etc.

The iqon I have been looking at (droolin) is 799 euro but an extra 350 for a lovely 17' flat screen.
I would be using the computer for business, accounts for hubby and son, which is why I want ms. word. or similuar. I have the "big red book" for accounts. I assume I can transfer that to the new computer???
other than that I just need internet and photoshop. They guy at the shop said that the moden is ready for broadband.. but by the time it gets to my area I will be looking at my 4th computer. :(
I dont have the spec at hand now but I just worry that I wont have enough memory or speed.
My first computer I might think of upgrading for my son who plays champion manager on it... very s l o w l y... he gets most of his homework done while waiting for a game to play on it.
how much would it cost to upgrade. I think its windows 95
thanks everyone for your help. :o

It will do all of the above with no problems. All modern spec pcs will handle that workload ok... and it'll be fast... just go for the new pc, you'll save a lot of time and hair (old pcs tend to cause loss of hair through pulling it out in frustration :D )

When he says that 'the modem is ready for broadband' he probably means that it has a network card.

you could also put your old pc in the buy and sell and get a few hundred euro for it if its in any decent condition at all.. dont expect too much though...
