Internet Connection & Firefox

There's something really strange up my 'net connection (wireless college). After rebooting I can still only access selected sites (boards.ie etc.) - the rest just time out. Even boards.ie does sometimes, and the text effects above this box arn't appearing - they're just in text and are distorting the page.

Everything is taking ages to load up except some random pages that are fine. Google and ireland.com don't load at all...

I'm using Firefox 1.0PR - IE6 can load ireland.com but still incredibly slowly. I'm on a 11Mbps connection here so what's going on?

I got into Vodafone but then internal pages timed out after. I've reconnected repeatedly too.

Only recent changes I've made are changing the startup progs via 'msconfig' command disabled ituneshelper, wireless mouse icon and MS Office and Works autodetect or something like that.

    Help!

Probably not ffox if ie6 is the same.

Check your proxy settings, when I was in college we had to have them set to a specific port etc.

Are you the only one having the problem? They used to throttle the connection so everything ran incredibly slowly, so you could just be a victim of annoying IT management.

I'm hoping your right. It's a Sunday and we're the only ones going to suffer! I'll check once the lads are back.

TBH I put firefox in the heading cos it seems to attract the regular computers board readers :) It is strange that IE6 is more patient (!) at trying to load the pages Firefox times out on though.

Proxy settings were fine before but we're not given a port just an auto-config script. I opened it recently and got one of the ports and details for EAC which needed specific details.

    Thanks for the reply!

You may have a theoretical 11mbps connection but with wireless that's not often true (even under optimal conditions you might get a sustained transfer rate that's half the max). Still it should be enough for browsing but have you tried moving your system to a different location to make sure it isn't some loca interference/lack of signal strength?

Oh I know I'm sharing the speed with everyone else or whatever - just demonstrating i'm not here on a dialup. I'll try move it around but it's not slow loading it's basically random (?) normal connections and the rest not really loading at all. As I said even the ones that load - at normal quick speed - are prone to errors with pictures not loading at all or the odd timeout for no reason.

The laptop hasn't moved it's on the desk as always.
