Those programs are interesting. I see people at lans using them. They log in like loads of times to your server and request the same file , i'm surmising at different resume positions. I dont see this increasing the speed of the download, I mean you get what bandwidth is available. Of course this is fine when you are downloading from laods of different servers, like they are intended to do, but in reality people hit the same server constantly.
The only thing this does is fill up all queue slots and stop other people from downloading.
However I noticed that everyone at the lan was using them and mutually excluding each other, and cloging up my server.
leeroybrown and I decided the best thing to do was to set
    AllowRetrieveRestart off
in proftpd, Because these clients request resume connections constantly, their download constantly resets. A simple solution, and no problem to users who request single files, ethernet is so fast anyway no one should need to resume.
I know this doesn't answer your qestion, I use wget for everything except some obscure ftp servers, i use ncftpget. The speeds are as much as the bandwidth will allow anyway, and even in the presence of 'dap' type programs they seem to hold their own.
Anyhow to answer your qestion check out :
    http://www.enderunix.org/aget/
    and http://prozilla.genesys.ro/
These packages will help you to hit on poorly administrated servers more effectively.

What you say is true in theory but the connection i am using is shaped per connection, so the more connections i make the higher the speed i get, up to about 8 or 10 times my stated connection speed [using DAP].
