Alright, Im preaching at a whole group of computer nerds, but still...
why the fu(k does everyone think the matrix is THAT good. I thought it was alright but nothing special and not one of the best movies of the nineties not to mind all time.
    So what is it...

The plot, well it's hardly original, i mean a whole season of Dallas was just someones dream. And Darkcity was based on the same proposition.
How about the acting, no ! its keanu reeves ffs.
The fighting ninja sh!t, well why dont' ya just get out a bruce lee movie.
    The soundtrack. NO!
The Dialogue, A little better than corny at the best of times.
The FX is the only thing i can think of...

Maybe it's cos Star Wars was so sh!t that the Matrix looked so good.

    i dunno

    Ah harvey!

Plot: Similar to (but pretty different from) Darkcity... but Darkcity rocked!

Acting wasnt great but lets face it, it was never going to be The English Patient. (Thank god)

The fight sequences were pretty cool, and better directed then most Bruce Lee films I've seen. Not, mind you, better fighting, just a better buzz about them.

    Soundtrack: YES!

Dialogue, ok its a fair cop, but it had its moments. "Dodge this!" but in general I take your point.

    FX rocked as you acknowledge.

I think part of it was the refreshing lack of hype beforehand. I heard bugger all about it in the lead up to it. If I hadnt seen a warez version of it I probably wouldn't have gone to see it so readily.

It was the best film of the year, prolly not the decade.

    DeV.

Yeah but it looked lovely. My pick of '99. Why is it that The Matrix is so popular with geeks? It is quite strange. Nobody say 'because they think they are the one' , because most of the geeks here have a semblance of reality. Myself excluded. I mean , who else post's on a message board at 4 AM having just woken up from falling asleep on the Kitchen floor two hours previously.I am going to go have breakfast.

The plot, the acting, the fighting ninja sh!t, the soundtrack, the Dialogue, the FX....

Yes, all of the above woven into a rich tapestry of wholesome cyber-ninja-combat-leetness.
And yes, I spent a whole two hours blissfully thinking I was 'the one'.

I agree, the Matrix wasn't good. It was alright the first time , but I dont see why people watch it like 5 or 6 times.

Fresh and Original, eye-poppingly innovative special effects.

Some old stuff, but turned on its head and delivered in a new package.

It was the direction that made it, although the soundtrack was damned good as well, and the art styling was exceptional. Few movies are so slick, so well-paced, and have the sense to parcel out special effects so well, rather than using them all in one climatic fight sequence.

I thought it was a great old romp tbh. I hate Star Trek and all that sci-fi ****e but still thought it was pretty damn good.

The Matrix is F00king amazing , its really good . the story isnt entirely new , but a lot of filsm that are made have counterparts that were done 10 years ago , but its about timing , and the matrix timed it well . It also has to be one of the best made/directed films that i have ever seen , some bits were annoying but because of the rest of the film you (I) didnt care.

Dark City was a bad film (in my opinion) the main actor was really shabby (worse than keanu) and a lot of the fighting type scence with eh floaty guys were done badly.

If you like that kind of stuff though , read a book called Neuromancer by William Gibson , im reading it at the moment and it was wrote in early eighties and is f00king amazing , ahead of its time , and is im told is being made into a Film and will be out soon , its about netrunning(cyberpunk people will know what im on about ) and has a real bladerunner feel to it as well which is cool.

dEV M8, HARVEE M8, lads thnk you so much for allocating a DESERVED footnote to what was probably the basis for the matrix.

and that was of course your reference to

    Dark City.

yes Dev,..... put simply, it rocked.

and not to mention the fact that Jennifer Connolly is most likely the most amazing babe of all time

YES I PROSTRATE MYSELF AT A STATUE OF HER MORE SO THAN I DO BUFFY,

BUFFY IS NOTHING IN COMPARISON TO JENNIFER CONNOLLY; THOSE EYES, THAT RAVEN BLACK HAIR CALLING ME TO A FTAE LONG EH AWAITED AND NOT FORGOTTEN, smile.gif

caps aside.... the matrix was inho based on dark city, sure in an interview the eh writer guy of the matrix was asked about it, and he said that he was very impressed and possibly impressioned by the film dark city.

only problem was dark city never made it to the cinema. and if it had, the oscars would have been a totally different story

    JENNIFER CONNOLLY FOR EVERYTHING WOOOHOOOO

    well nuff said, cept

thnax a mill dev and harvee

Essentially, the Matrix is a brilliant special FX film with a fairly good plot.

Dark City didn't have the Keanu "A-list big star" appeal and was a bit too dark for what the studios probably call mainstream audiences.

Both explore the common theme that tries to explain that strange feeling we sometimes get of deja-vu and that the world in general is not as it seems. Simply put it's the "Not Fitting In Factor" seen in countless films taken to another level.

So I would regard the Matrix as being as plageristic to Dark City as Star Wars is to the fairy stories (brave but poor "knight" rescues princess from castle) it was inspired by.

Personally I preferred the Matrix because of the many key scenes that made it brilliant. For example the bit where Reeves calls for a gun and a massive gun rack appears. All that dodging bullets and running up walls malarky was cool as well and meant that the intensity of the Matrix was a couple of notches higher.

In Dark City the way the twist at the end was revealed was awe-inspiring. It made the film. The majority of people just weren't expecting the ending which is sadly uncommon. In the matrix the same revelation is less awe-inpiring but yet it had to be to have the film make sense.

But the main thing about the matrix has to be Laurence Fishburne. The guy is just so fupping cool. His acting made what would have been medicore films like Bad Company and Event Horizon into good ones. So his inclusion in the Matix meant that what would have been a fairly good action flik became an excellent action flik.

Going off topic for a bit...
I hear a lot of Phantom Menace Bashing going on in this thread and elsewhere. I thought it was pretty good but wish I was a kid when I saw it. It's a essentially a kids film. It's a fairy story set in a completely different context.
PM and probably the next two won't bring back that childhood feeling of awe that the original did for me and people my age. Star wars (the original trilogy) is a victim of it's own success as after it came out it created the special fx industry within which a whole genre of special fx driven films where made. (Let's face it, if there was no Star Wars there'd be no Matrix)

So the new Star wars films not only have to compete against the old trilogy and the associated nostalga factor but recent sfx based films as well. Seen against that backdrop the Phantom Menace is a damn good film.

P.s for those Jennifer Connelly obsessionists that haven't (or have, whatever wink.gif) seen it I highly recommend One Wild Night as she spends almost the entire film in a tight white top :b

P.P.S Fans of Dark City should rent out Brazil (from the guy who brought you 12 Monkeys, Terry Gilliam)

Brazil is a ****ing mental film. Forget Blade Runner. This is a vision of the future! But what the hell was Bob De Niro doing in the middle of it? The guy looked more out of place then a traveller in a Body Shop. Great film. Dare I say better then The Matrix.
