I heard of this game before - has anyone tried this game? It's a rogue type game. http://www.thangorodrim.net/

I've played it quite a bit. Diablo 2 "borrowed" many of its gameplay features from Angband and its variants e.g. the home town with limited inventory, the shops, the constantly spawning random monsters, the unique monsters etc.

IMHO it can be difficult to get to grips with it. The controls can be quite confusing for new players. Not to mention the text based graphics! Also if you die, that's it, game over. Your savegame is marked so you have to restart. Even allowing for the rather high difficulty level, it can be a VERY addictive game.

The Angband source code was cleaned up a few years ago and since it's open source, numerous variants have popped up. These play mostly the same but may have different races, character classes and monsters. If you're a fan of Roger Zelazny's Amber series of books check out http://www.zangband.org.

My personal favourite variant is ToME (Tales of Middle Earth) which is based on Tolkien's books. In ToME you travel to areas such as Moria, Lothlorien and Mt. Doom amongst others. There's also a lot of other interesting features added including quests which can make it easier to level up your character in the beginning but much harder later on, e.g. An early quest might have you killing 10 Newts but a late quest might have you taking on Ancient Dragons. TOME looks good. Has a bit of a quest line to it. The PC can get corruptions like ADOM. Hope you don't get them too fast! Its nice to take your time in an rogue/rpg game. :)
