I was reading a post about buying blank dvds and people talked about copying 3 movies and 5 data dvds.

How do you copy a movie dvd.

Can you copy a normal dvd ?

Can you do this with a dvd-r?

looks for dvd decrypter and dvd shrink and you'll have everything you need.

as koneko says though dvdrhelp will give you some guides if you get stuck, but its fairly simple with those two tools.

open dvd decrypter and select 'copy main movie files' and click on decrypt (it will automatically choose the drive with the most space and copy it to that location (make a note of where it's putting them though so you can find them after).

when it's done, open dvd shrink and open the folder where your dvd (.vob) files are. if the total folder is smaller than 4.5gb then you'll be fine to just 'back it up' (just click that button), if not you'll need to 're-author' it to make the video files a little bit smaller so they fit on a disk.

alternatively, if you want all the menu's and extras on the new disk then just open the dvd itself in dvd shrink and re-author the whole thing and burn it to a new dvd. only problem is if it's a big disk you'll lose some quality.

    it's up to you though.

if you can't find either of those apps then google will lead the way. ;-)

www.doom9.org <--- Best info around. For highest quality, DVD-Rebuilder + CCE.

For highest speed: DVD Shrink and other similar transcoders all give pretty much the same quality.

And contrary to popular belief, you can only fit 4.36gb of data on a DVD. Tis one of the magicaly quirks of data storage.

yeah, I knew it was less than 4.7gig, but couldn't for the life of me remember exactly what it was. thought 4.5 was a good bet. guess not.

Friend of mine was bitching to me that all of his 50 DVD+R's i ordered from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk (shameless plug: DIRT CHEAP DVD'S) were dodgy, so i went over to see what the problem was.

He was trying to fit 4.65gb on it :p I sorted him out pretty quickly then, heh heh heh.

its amazing how people not read the disc to see how much room is on it and how big the files they trying to put on it!

it's that base10 thing that hard drive manufacturers have been using to con people for years with. you'd think anyone who's ever bought any kind of digital storage would have it sussed by now wouldn't you.

    how forgetful we can be.

i never was any good with numbers. ;)
