    site : www.ubuntulinux.org
Ubuntu 4.10 Preview (codenamed "the Warty Warthog", or just "warty")

hey thought people might like this, they bascially take a snapshot of unstable debian , apply recent patches and very up to date apps, evolution, gnome 2.8, xchat 2, firefox as the default browser, kernel 2.6.8.1 - you get the idea

it comes on one cd with a really smooth install (even worked on a very old laptop i have) - no more X nightmares as some people were having trouble with

its downloadable from their site, but they are also doing a nice giveaway on the site, they'll send you copies (10+ if u want) towards the end of october and they will even pay for postage, nice to hand out to a few mates etc..

This version that they will ship out (for free) will be the full release :)

Can I use both Ubuntu and Debian packages together, in the same sources.list?

In general, it's not a very good idea. While Debian and Ubuntu are compatible to a large degree, and share many of the same source packages, the binary packages are not identical due to having been built independently.

Thus, if Debian and Ubuntu package lists are mixed, there will be some packages which have the same version number, but are actually distinct. APT currently does not handle that situation elegantly, and unexpected behaviour may occur.[p/quote]

    About Ubuntu

Sponsored by http://www.canonical.com [i[headquarters in Isle of Man ![/i] the Ubuntu project attempts to work with Debian to address the issues that keep many users from using Debian. Ubuntu provides a system based on Debian with frequent time-based releases, corporate accountability, and a more considered desktop interface. Ubuntu provides users with a way to deploy Debian with security fixes, release critical bug fixes, a consistent desktop interface, and to never be more than six months away from the latest version of anything in the open source world.

Like knoppix it can run from CD or install to HDD and has openoffice and the usual server apps. I can't find a complete list of apps - so I can't see if it has anything that knoppix doesn't apart from Gnome vs. KDE

Interesting distro, to say the least. Gonna download overnight and have a look at the weekend.

I had a look at it, alright, but I'm a fairly old hand with Debian at this stage, so I won't be using it myself. Might be good for potential converts, though.

same here, but I reckon its a good idea, its basically what most of us do anyway when we install debian, I was thinking of making my own bootable cd at some stage but maybe this will do, cheers!
