I've been slobbering all over the specs of this monster machine all day, particularly because I'm a dealer for it and one love to install one, but I can't see there being much requirement for it in homes in this country yet.

    MAX-MMS900M.png
The AMX MAX MMS900M Media Server - Not the prettiest thing on earth, but check out what it does:

It's a DVD/CD server with 7.2 terrabytes of storage (yes, you read that right!) - it can eat up to 900 DVDs or 25,000 CDs, all uncompressed!!! It stores DVDs in their native uncompressed Component format complete with full uncompressed surround sound and all multimedia features. The server works off a bank of 250GB SATA drives in a RAID5 format, so everything is automatically backed up.

It requires a Gigabit network (1000Mbps) to talk to clients in each room of your home. It's capable of streaming into 24 rooms simultaneously. That means 24 people can be watching different uncompressed DVD movies from the one server at the same time. All controlled by lovely touch panels which can also receive the streaming DVD content for preview purposes. It automatically whips cover art off the net which can be browsed from any of the control touch panels.

An animal of a machine, I want one, but I don't know why, or what use I would have for it. Here's the killer - it cost €60k. And that's only for the server, not the touch panels or the network. Ah well, we can dream...

    Robbie

I read somewhere that if you count all of the music that has ever been recorded anywhere in the world, there are about 10 million tracks. It's surely only a matter of years before a device like the above server becomes available pre-loaded with every piece of music ever recorded. The storage capacity is there now (5 of these servers would cover it), but there could be slight legal issues involved :D

hah, how much would that cost then - 10 million songs and a device to store it.
    good luck finding anything :)

Well that's the point, is that storage devices are becoming cheaper all the time. Probably by the end of 2005 most high end PCs will be shipping with a terrabyte of hard disk storage. You would need about 35 terrabytes for 10 million tracks, which would probably be affordable in maybe 4 or 5 years.

As to the price of the tracks, well that's a different thing! It potentially could be a pirates dream though. Imagine you could buy a hard drive with maybe 2 million songs on it - In a few years this won't be that expensive to duplicate, so it's possible. Will be interesting when it all happens. Heh, the music industry think they're in trouble now, eh?

Wow Where would I get its smaller and much cheaper version for a house. I want to install speakers all around the house controlled centrally. Any Ideas?
