    The number of new cars licensed in August 2004 was up 8.4% on the same time last year. New figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that 9,599 new private cars were licensed last month, compared to 8,859 in August 2003.

    In the first eight months of the year, there were 130,681 new private cars licensed, an increase of 5.4% on the same time last year.

    The CSO said that first licensing of second hand private cares increased by 66% on the same month last year and increased by 48% in the year to date.

    New goods vehicles licensed increased by 13% in August 2004 compared to August 2003, and decreased by 1.6% in the first eight months of 2004 compared with the same period a year ago.

    The most popular make of new cars licensed in August was Toyota (1,299), followed by Volkswagen (980), Ford (889), Opel (826), Peugeot (619) and Nissan (592).
