    Lads/Lassies,
I'm off to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and then onto OZ etc for a year(maybe more).
    Anyway,
I went haversack hunting today and I am now tempted to buy a Low Alpine 70 litre Travelfinder Haversack, basically its airport friendly and zips all around, its 175 euros - does anybody have one of these, would it be big enough for this trip, there are a lot of cheaper bags around, anybody recommend one.

Also, I noticed in the great outdoors there was a discounted breathable north face rain jacket, its nice and light etc. But i am thinking do i need one of these/rain gear - will it not be hot and sunny all the time.

Also, what the hell did you bring clothes wise, I was thinking of bringing 4 or 5 pairs of jeans and about the same amount of shorts, is this too many etc. Do i need long trousers etc

Any info appreciated, especially on the rain gear and Haversack and whats vital to bring.
    cheers!

My advice would be to bring only what is absolutely necessary. Remember that you have to carry all this stuff around. A couple of t-shirts, a long sleeve shirt, a pullover, a couple of pairs of shorts, a couple of pairs of socks and a couple of pairs of underwear.
I wouldn't bother with bringing jeans at all. They're really bulky and you'll sweat to death wearing them over there. If you must, bring a pair of light trousers that you can zip off the legs and they turn into shorts.

Clothes in Asia and Australia are much cheaper than over here. Buy whatever you need over there if you need it. You'll end up dumping most of your stuff along the way as you don't need it.

As for the backpack, I'd just buy a cheap one - less chance if it being nicked on buses and trains if it looks a bit shabby. Backpacks in Asia and Oz are really cheap in the markets.

Only take what you absolutely need. Good luck on your trip.

I'm probably doing something similar in January Empirix. Except as well as SE Asia I'm going back around to Nepal and India aswell (then on to Oz). If I was you I'd just bring 1 or maybe 2 Jeans. And T-Shirts can be bought for next to nothing in Asia so you might be better getting that sort of stuff over there. Same goes for sandles/flip-flops.
I know what you mean though. I've already started to think about what I'll bring and it's not gonna be easy to fit everthing into one rucksack.
You could always get some of the bulkier stuff shipped straight over to Oz.

I'd go for the lowe alpine one, you will get your money's worth with Lowe Alpine. My sister got a gelert bag when she went travelling (roughly same destination as you) and the zip burst when she was as far as stanstead. North Face make good gear but in the Great Outdoors they rape you as far as price is concerned. The bald scottish manager also tells his staff to sell as much stuff as possible to customers and convince them they need stuff they don't so be wary. Also. try the patagonia shop on Exchequer St, they often do last seasons stuff and seconds at great prices, fantastic rain jackets and good travel trousers like ones that zip into shorts and have a secret inside pocket for money/documents
