Turning on pc with no cpu?

    Hey all,
    Just had a quick question.
As some of you know (from my previous stupid Q's lol) im in the middle of a build. I have everything i need set up bar the cpu, which i wont be able to get for a few weeks at least.
Now as you may expect im kinda anxious to turn it on & see if ive got it all put together right, as ive got all sorts of fancy pants crap in there like cold cathode lights, a cooler master musketeer, etc etc.
I know if i turn the pc on without a cpu it obviously wont post, but would it do any damage to the mobo? Would it be okay to turn it on to test if all the other stuff is in & hooked up correctly?

I doubt you be able to test anything at all, like you already know, it wont post, no screen will disply, how you gonna know if it works or not! some mobo will beep when cpu not in or failure, thats pretty much all you gonna get, apart from that you wont know, you can use multi meter to test the voltage, but thats about it and it would be different with CPU in it!

As StRiKeR says, you won't find anything out except that your motherboard is able to give a POST error code. The CPU and memory are the first things that are checked at POST so the board won't even try to detect anything beyond that.

If I were you I'd just wait for the CPU to arrive, test the minimal component set and then add the other bits. That's what I always do anyway.

Yeah i thought as much, i really just wanted to check had i hooked up the pwoer switch/reset switch buttons correctly. I know id get no display and all, but id at least get power and thats all i need to see if i got my ccl lights fans etc all hooked up properly. So it WOULDNT damage the mobo then?

It shouldn't. The board will be designed to detect the absense of a CPU and fall over in the typical mess of beeps/LEDs that the BIOS has to communicate with you.

you wont do any damage, but its better if you install you cpu and heatsink and your ram first before installing the board, it makes things alot easier and less chance of doing damage as you have much more room to work on!

As far as I remember when I did it nothing happened - literally nothing, not even beep codes, POST, etc....nada.

You would very likely have saved money by waiting to buy everything when you can afford it. All the other unused parts are getting cheaper by the day

Main thing: you build = you learn

Good luck once the CPU arrives :)
