Prescott Reference Temperatures

    Hi:

    Just build a system around a 3.0Ghz (E) Prescott S478, Stock Fan and H/S.

The Abit EQ util reports temps of around 39c after playing a DVD and playing a game for 1.5 hours.

Best of my knowledge this is low for a Prescott... can anyone give me reference temps for Prescotts in the 'Irish climate'?

Google gives some guidelines (65c at idle) but they seem way off! Is it possible my temperature is being reported incorrectly?

The reason I ask is I want to set reasonable limits for the BIOS to shutdown in case of overheating...

    Cheers

I've messed about with a Prescott 3.0 with SETI to see if the 1meg L2 cache made much difference to the workunit times and the the temps were pretty high. It was about 55 idle and was pushing close to 80 on full load. This was with 2 command line clients running. It didn't take long to reach those temps either so I just shut it down and put it away. Silly temps for a 3.0Ghz CPU...

So what is a reasonanble upper limit to save the mobo and processor from frying!

I currently have it set at 75c.

Am giving it a Sandra bashing this evening to see how high I can get it to go!

the new steppings seem to have corrected the temperatures....

Yea grap CPU Z and check to see what stepping you have. If its a D0 then those temps are fine (and your lucky for overclocking) if its a C0 you either have pretty good cooling or its a wrong temp!!

PS for load temp run Prime95 (link in the sticky's on the tweaking/modding forum or try google). It is a much better test than SiSandra........ far far better and will push temps and stress levels higher.
