A few weeks back i bought some ecc reg buffered ram, only to find out that my motherboard only takes non ecc unbuffered ram. is there any way to change settings on the motherboard to take the ram?

I doubt it. I think that regged ram is mainly intended for Socket 940 setups like AthlonFX, Opteron and the like.
