i was trying to upgrade to XP on my win 2000 laptop and for some reason the monitor wont work(driver issue i'm sure), anyway so i got knoppix so i could remove any important files and then wipe it and install xp(or 2000) again, but with knoppix it wont let me write to either my USB or Firewire external hardrive, even though i have deselected the read only box and it does say the drive is writable in properties. what am i doing wrong. oh yeah and knoppix shows that the drives have different sizes to what they actually have ( shows a lot smaller)

im sorry if this is a bit incoherant but any help would be brilliant.

    thanks

how are the hard drives formatted?
did you format them from XP ? i.e. ntfs. .
if they are i dont think knoppix will let you write to them, even if you wanted to, for your own good..
you could try format them in fat32 or ext2 or summit? if thats the problem..

As above. The write support for NTFS under Linux is 'experimental'. It's actually possible to get it working but the guy who develops the driver is rather cautious with it for obvious reasons.

TBH, you should chose to format your pen drive to FAT32 anyway as it's a more suitable FS for limited write media.

Re-format your pendrive to a FAT file system and it should be writable from both windows and linux.

how easy is it to do, it is a 40gb hard drive can i do it through windows xp on my other laptop or will i have to do through my desktop?

also does anyone know where outlook stores emails?

Formatting the 40Gb drive will be easy. If your laptop can detect it then it's just a case of formatting it from Computer Management in the Control Panel.

Outlook stores it's mail in .pst files. They should be in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Try creating a slipstreamed XP install disk with the correct XP graphics driver for your PC. Then boot off the XP disk, format the drive and install it.

You will find the info on how to this here, http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/14-p1.php

Have you setup Captive NTFS ?
Knoppix uses XP files to read/write to NTFS and for copyright reasons you have to pull them off your existing HDD. Go into the Knoppix menu and it's the last item on it.

If you have defraged your HDD and it was never more than 70% full then you could [take a deep breath] resize the NTFS partition and create a new fat32 one in the freed up space. In qtparted - options - there is an NTFSRESIZE utility

Before you run this open a root console window and check the minimum size the partition can drop to man ntfsresize again some risk of data loss as with all utils of it's type

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/ - looks like it is down at the moment

ok but looking at it now it wont even let me write to my hard drive on my computer even though its fat32. i cant even create a new file.

To write to the 40Gb hardrive from within Knoppix you'll need to
    a) log in as root or
    b) mount the drive with umask=0 permissions

[edit]ehm, I'm not actually sure there is a root account in Knoppix. Anyone? [/edit]

There is a root a/c. All linux distributions have a root(by which I mean UID 0) account.

It's been a while since I used Knoppix but typing either su[/b] or sudo bash should give you a root shell. Also you can Ctrl+Alt+F[1,2,..] out to another desktop and it will have a root shell.

You can also get a root shell in Knoppix on the Menu
