Learner drivers may face new test system
    19/09/2004 - 10:09:36

Some of Ireland’s three-hundred thousand provisional licence holders may be forced to undergo training before being allowed to sit their test.

New proposals being examined by the Department of Transport aim to overhaul the driving license system.

Under the new plans, learners will apply for a driving permit and have to sit at least one test within two years of getting their first permit.

A person will be allowed apply for a maximum of two permits, each valid for two years.

If the driver fails a test they will have to complete five hours of training before re-sitting the test.

Learners are allowed to take the test as many times as necessary in the four years, but they must complete five hours training after each failure.

The changes may be introduced by early next year.

If they do this, I sincerely hope they do it right - by mandating a specific syllabus and having proper accreditation for the driving schools. There are far too many Mickey-Mouse outfits out there. I even know of instructors that keep the rear fog-lamps on in the name of "increased visibility".
