Just thought id make a thread for people to talk about their new dvds :D

I watched a new hope yesterday, my god, the quality is amazing, still as great a film as ever. Was it just me or were some of the fly by's over the planets brand new, or at least completely redone.

I might start watching some of the extra disc, anyone seen it?, any good stuff on it?

Not going to buy it, refuse to give my money to George Lucas :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

    Why is that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,107 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Because he's Mr. "I hate all forms of commercialism, here have an annoying character that ruins the films but makes good action figure". I despise hyprocrites. Wasn't really too pushed on getting the films in the first place, especially after the modifications (I really hate that Hayden whatshisname guy), if I want them I'll probably copy them/download them or something.

Its a bit stupid not to buy it because you don want to give your money to George Lucas, after all, hes not the only person who put work into those films, there were hundreds of people and hes not the only one getting money.

Well, anyway, the box set seems great to me, well worth the money.

tbh im not gonna get it either, i have the origional on tape. I might down the road get all 6 on dvd, ill wait and see what the offer is when it happens. I believe it to be a money grabbing exercise and lucas is without doubt one of the greatest sell outs of all time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,107 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Hmmm, didn't really think of it that way. And the box sets are very reasonably priced...

Would you prefer four or five different editions to have been released over the years as Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness and George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead have recieved? Instead of a high quality set like the one that has been released? Say what you will about the ommision of the original films, but calling it a sell out or a money grabbing excercise is ludicrous.

i just picked up my copy. im thinking long term collectiors item. when the first batch of dvds arrived in ireland they were printed wrong , the empire strikes back was printed on two discs, but you still have the three films. this will be worth a lot of money to collectiors in time. not that many people have one of these copys. as they were all recalled, before sale date today. what you think collectiors or what? the same happened to a beatles ablum and as far as i can remember it worth five times the correct print.

There are alot more copies of the messed up DVD made than that beetles record so dont count on making a mint selling it in years to come.

Exactly, dont count on DVD's becoming collector items they are like CD's & Lazer Disc's - mass produced, worth the money for you to enjoy the quality, and if you look after them they'll last but dont bank on getting rich off them.

Those videos if they are the original non SE editions could be worth something in a few years as they will never be released again according to Lucas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,705 ✭✭✭BrookieD

videos are defo non SE these were released about 1990, in widescreen, when Fox did a widescreen promo on Star Wars, Die Hard and Alien

I am absolutely disgusted with this Box Set of DVDs.
They are the touched up versions that were released in the cinema in 1997.
I'm glad I still have my original 1977 theatrical release versions which I bought in 1994.
Why on earth did Lucas have to add in the bits that he cut from the original versions??
There was a reason he cut those scenes in the first place...
    THEY WERE EFFIN' SHOITE!!

I think both versions (1977 and 1997) are worth it.

Lucas says he doesn't want to release the orginals because it wasn't his "complete" vision... and now that he has the money and the technology he can "complete" it.

I like the Han Solo / Jabba scene... OK it looks "fake" but fair play to him... he shoot the scene at the time with a Fat bastard and it didn't really work... he got the guts to cut it...

I still hate the fact the Greedo shoots first in the Cantina... Han Solo is a selfish bastard originally and that's the way he is then... getting involved with the rebellion and Leia changes him.

The DVDs even has changes compared to the 1997 Special Editions...
    http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/20/star.changes/index.html

It's even more of a shame knowing that with the DVD seemless branching feature it's possible to fit both versions on 1 dual-layer disc.

I can undertand Lucas wish to improve his creation but he fails to understand the fans' point of view who grew up with originals... I like to see the old special effects, the models...etc... It's like for E.T. I prefer the rubber puppet face to the CGI they used in the 20th anniversary release.

Personally, I downloaded some LaserDisc to DVD transfers so I can watch the original trilogy.
Later I made the LD transfer myself to see if I could improve the quality. Slight improvement but overall it's nothing near the current DVD release.

I also was able to find and download 3 different "Making Of" LD (or VHS) to DVD transfers.

Next I hope to get a good version of the infamous "Star Wars christmas Special"... I remember seeing it as a kid and I have a crappy real media file... there must be a decent VHs somewhere to transfer to DVD. Anyway, I don't think Lucas will ever release this on DVD :) it's locked in his basement with Howard The Duck !

I must pull back on some of my venomous comments already made.
I seriously watched the full DVD Boxed Set over the weekend (minus the special features disc).

I have to say that I was EXTREMELY impressed with the final movie in the series, Ep. VI Return of the Jedi. It was a much better movie than the original version. Flowing story, less importance given to those stoopid fuzzy Ewoks, the attack on the unfinished second Death Star was "most impressive" (pun intended! :p )
At the end the celebrations, festivities and fireworks displays in the various cities round the Empire, which were visited in the earlier episodes, was a nice touch too.
Reminded me a bit of the VE day celebrations you see in those WW2 documentaries.

The only thing that annoyed me about this version was, at the very end, when you see the ghostly figures of the dead jedis. Why does Obi-wan and Yoda get to spend eternity as wrinkley old farts and Annakin gets to be forever youthful? Not fair really.

I'm afraid that I have to bite my tongue and say I was wrong with my initial comments.
It doesn't happen often that I admit I was wrong... take note... it may never happen again!!!

The reason why Anakin looks young as a ghost is because that's the way he looked before turing to the dark side. Some can argue that he's good again after killing the emperor.

finally arrived!! havnt watched the films yet, but im very impressed with the doc on the bonus disc.

Problem with it is that the original film had the kindly old man version of anakin which looked much better than that hayden twat.
Also I hadn't read about the changes for the dvds. Changing Boba Fetts voice is just going way too far.
Overall though the quality is amazing and it's great to have them. I only have Star Wars (original theatrical release) on video but it's important to me to have it so I can remember a film that meant so much to me as a kid.

YES!!! I had to turn back those scenes a few times to hear his voice... I thought I was hearing things

I totally agree with that. I won't be getting rid of my original vhs versions either. A New Hope was one of the first movies that I went to see in the cinema so I want to preserve that memory! :D (It was either A New Hope or Close Encounters of the Third Kind... can't fully remember, I was 3yrs old after all. ;) Either way they were 2 good movies to have as your first cinema experience)

Yes.. that really sticks out as most of the supporting cast have English accents in the films and then suddenly there is this Australian accent from out of nowhere.

I've watched A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back so far. I've also watched a chunk of the documentary, which is very interesting and has lots of great footage. Kurt Russell auditioning for Han Solo, oh yes.

The sneak preview of Episode 3 isn't particularly great though, but does show how Lucas is surrounded by a bunch of sycophants these days.

George (turning to everyone in the room):
    Doesn't that look good?

    Everyone:
    Yes, yes, yes.

    :p Sucker.
Well, you can enjoy your fuzzy VHS crackly stereo version of the trilogy, while I kick it back in my recliner and watch the crisp new digitally remastered DVD's with Dolby 5.1, on my 42" Plasma.
Yeah - damn you Lucas, you sellout!! How dare you remaster YOUR films in line with YOUR original vision.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,040 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

And how dare an honest fan express an opinion on that vision.

Finally got the "Star Wars Christmas Special" on DVD.
Oh My God !!! It's even tackier than I could remember.

The source must have been a 2nd or 3rd generation VHS copy. It's not too grainy but the mono soundtrack is shocking but it's believed to be on of the best version available.
