ok... is it at all possible to take a (music) track apart and break it down into its basic elements... so you're left with just the vocals, or just the guitar etc.?

I'm sure if I could get my hands on studio master tapes, I'd have no problem... but thats not going to happen.

It must be possible to do, take the "bootleg" mixed songs doing the rounds at the moment.

If so, what programme is best for it, and how much knowledge does it take?

    No not really.

Some things may be possible with good filters such as the bass track but really it would be very tricky to do. I don't know of any programs that would do that personally. I would imagine it would take quite a bit of knowledge in audio theory to do too.

Although, it depends what exactly you want to do with these seperate tracks. Do you want to create a new mix of guitar, bass vocals? If so then you can try downloading "Pro Tools free" for example from www.digidesign.com and creating duplicated tracks for guitar, vocals and bass and then you would go on an equalising spree, filtering each copy of the song to the EQ ranges of the instrument.

Although, maybe software has gone a long way since I started out so I could be misinformed.

Im afraid your out of luck on this one. Like gordon said, its not possible to separate the individual instruments because theres too much frequency bleed.

Most of those mixes are done using the instrumental and acapella versions of the songs that are released on vinyl copies of the track. Id guess that some of them are also done from bootlegged masters as well.
