    Not hardcore, but a fan.
Had most of his stuff on tape, until the lot got stolen by some skanger.

Yeah, Zappa rules. My earliest memory is of listening to my Mum's 'Absolutely Free" LP when I was about three.

'Hot Rats', what more can I say? :)

No way! You've gotta be kidding. That's gotta be the best childhood memory, ever! Did you mum sing along? Cool Mum.

I don't think a party is a party unless Sheik Yarbouti has been played in it's entirety.

it ain't a party unless "weasels ripped my flesh" has been played!

Surely you mean Uncle Meat, playing every version of King Kong?

Or how about 200 motels?? Throw on "Half A Dozen Provocative Squats" or "This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich"!!! That ought to get everyone up and dancing

what about Overnight Sensation .absolutely brilliant !!!!

The BBC showed a profile of him shortly after he died. One of the performances was of King Kong with the Mothers. Motorhead plays the most fantastic sax solo you'l ever hear. Well worth hunting down.

Reginald Durdle and the Zappatronics. A famous blues band from the 30's.

Bull****, blues is only around since the 70's? I did a search and it's a guy called Frank Zappa.

Ahem... what!? Blues predates jazz... and jazz has been around over 100 years now.

I recently got into Zappa, but I wanna know, whats (regarded) as his best album? I think i'll buy "We're only in it for the money" next. Has anyone read his book, The Real Frank Zappa Book? Its genius.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

His stuff is so varied, it's hard to say what is his best. I love his earlier stuff, with "Hot Rats" being a particular favourite, but I really love "Uncle Meat" too. My mum has "...For The Money" and "Absolutley Free" on vinyl from back in the day, and I'd go for "Absolutely Free" out of those two, if made to choose. You just can't beat "Invocation and Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin" when you want to get down.

it's almost impossible to say what his best album is!!! he has so many different styles of music. Some of the best IMO however are-
    Freak out!
    One size fits all
    uncle meat
    hot rats
    the grand wazoo
    civilization phase 3
we're only in it for the money
    YCDTOSA vol.2
    jazz from hell
    etc!! :D

that book kicks ass. also check out 'electric don quixote' by neil slaven- very good stuff

indeed it is!! although the vinyl version without the vocals is WAY better.
    you should also check out:
    200 motels
    Overnite Sensation
    Apostrophe
    Joe's Garage
    and
    Roxy And Elsewhere

    my favourites are
    the grand wazoo
    hot rats
    roxy & elsewhere
    waka/jawaka
live at the filmore east, 1971
    one size fits all
    over-nite sensation
we're only in it for the money

it's crazy i saw this thread when i did, cause i'm going through a very intense zappa phase right now - although i much prefer his instrumental jazz rock stuff to the SONGS which are usually just a bit much for me.. divx'd the live in new york (not 'live@the filmore') dvd and all i watch from it is Zoot Allures since the rest is just bollocks.

a lot of people get upset when i say things like that, because you usually encounter people who either hate zappa with a passion or are totally over-the-top obsessive about him. but really.. some of the stuff is pure crap.
