Firefox has issues

Despite advocating firefox in my sig, etc. I'm well p!ssed with it right now. Having installed the newest version (1.0preview) a few days ago I'd happily setup my bookmarks, extensions, options, etc.

Suddenly I get a windows blue screen flash up today and then restarts my laptop. Serious error reported (don't have the gibberish details windows gives you or how to open the log file) and now firefox opens no problem. Except all my bookmarks are erased, I'm presented with the original big toolbar, etc.

What happened? Is it just buggy - because my homepage and extensions stayed.

Not exactly a complete meltdown I'll admit but I'd invested a bit (too much) time customising the stupid thing.

    Any advice?

Spec: 1800 Athalon, 224 Megs of Ram, 2GB HD space, XP home with no SPs installed (I'm doing it once I backup)

Same thing happend to me a few days ago. A bit of a kick in the teeth at the time losing all my bookmarks
I put it down to the various upgrade's between versions so I took the opportunity to completly deleate it (delete the config files in the windows folder aswell) and start afresh with a new version.

Maybe there is a way to get the the bookmarks back but either way It's best to clear it out anyway.

Thanks - if you find a way please post it here because I'd starting organising the damn things for the first time ever.

Next time I'll export it immeadiatley!

That's why smart people keep an exported copy of their favourites on their pen drive. :p

No need to gloat! I'm guessing you typed that before you saw my reply - or do you just like rubbing it in? :)

Pen drives can fall down toilets you know.

I have had the problem of bookmarks disappearing. it was generally a firefox crash/locked in memory.

Other then that I haven't had any problems with it. You can also export your bookmarks in the manage bookmarks section.

Or re-import from your disused IE :D

Have had the pc on since 1.0 was released. No errors / crashes but I miss my tabbrowser extensions :(

one other thing that firefux does is not save the little icon beside the bookmark when the browser exists. why is this? it would be far quicker to load up a bookmark with the little icon beside it rather than having to read EACH link

    Firefox saves them for me...

Have you tried going into your Application Data folder and see if there is more than one profile in the firefox folder.
You might find that there are two profiles and your bookmarks may still in fact be there.

They are kept in your cache as far as I remember and are only updated when you go visit the page.

If your cache is full/set too low or not active then Firefox (just like IE) will read the website to pull in the icon.

Some nice things I like as well about firefox.

about:cache = Cache Viewer (even cache in memory)
    about:config = Configuration Editor

    Not sure of any others.

Very same thing happened to me when using Opera. One time when I started it up all the toolbars were reset, bookmarks and history removed. Hasn't happened since.

I've had a looked through the firefox files but any hope of finding my full bookmarks is gone as it's already got the new (empty) list added.

Changing topic slightly: If you install extensions directly using the link on the mozilla website - are they hidden somewhere? The extensions folder has gibberish.

Are you better off d/l by right clicking on the install link and making your own backup somewhere (given the previous talk on firefox wiping things!)?

    Thanks.

P.S. Adblock is the coolest extension I've used yet. Too lazy to give it a chance until now - this thing rocks!

It has a few small minor issues, but not as much as my IE issues, crashed every 10 - 15 mins. Firefox runs on and on without a crash. I can live with what it has to offer.

I have also switched to Thunderbird the email client.

If your IE is crashing that often you should check for spyware.

Firefox has always ran pretty buggy on my system. Random crashing and succh. I jsut stick to Mozilla, (at least until a less bugged build of firefox is released)
