howdy.Like the title says, my pc is using way too much RAM on idle. Im talking ~50%. (i have 512 PC3200 TwinMos RAM) This cant be right. And this is with out any real programs running (WindowBlinds, Samurize, etc)

Ive attached a pic of my task manager if it helps.

Can anyone give me a reason for this overusage?

Isnt there a CMD command to show all your processes in full?

    Thanks

You've a fair few programs running. Could be a memory leak somewhere?

Run Hijack This and then slap the log up here. :D

    Done and Done!

Not a great file name choice though

You have a fair bit of stuff running. Did you try going into msconfig, disabling everything and then rebooting, for a start?

okey doke.thanks 4 the help. One of the main things "working behind the scenes" is Norton Antivirus so it may just be that. Or maybe its time for an extra 512 Stick.

    Thanks

If you running Win XP or 2000 go to taskmanager and it will tell you what is running and how much ram its using.

Norton is a memory hog BTW.

Best way to see whats hogging is to hit CTRL-ALT-DEl and go to the processes tab (do this in XP or NT). Then arrange the stuff by memory usage. Your usage seems to be the same as mine (ish).

Runnign Firefox, Azurues, DC++, MSN, Winroute Firewall and Bandwidth Metre and have about 256 free. The biggest hogs are Firefox, Javaw, explorer, DC++ then Winroute Firewall.

I don't think its anything much to worry about. But more ram would always help :p

EDIT: Didn't see your first attachment :p. Your explorer is using 34mb or ram, mine uses 15.

All my SVCHOST.EXE's total to about 12mb of ram. Yours total to about 38mb

Don;'t know what ccapp is, but those processes are taking a lot of ram when combined, so you might want to see about shutting them off.

TLNTSVR might be extra crap aswell. Also, you can probabaly disable Asusprobe. I doubt you need that running 24x7. I presume wlancfg has something to do with your computer connecting to a lan... but thats also worth investigating. YOu might want to turn that off too (if its not needed)

yea, i dunno.Im thinking of getting more RAM anyway, but im pretty sure i shouldnt be using so much.

How do i check what all the svchost's are again? Its in CMD?

Im going to sit down and go through all the odd processes and see what needs to go. Its stopping them from starting again on the next bootup that will be the problem

Part of your problem is the iexplore process (internet explorer), that says it's using 25Mb but it's probably using more than that. You should also try and find out what ccApp, ccEvtMgr, ccProxy and ccSetMgr are and disable them if you don't need them, they're using quite a bit too. The svchost processes are to do with various system services, you can go into the Services applet in control panel->administrative tools and disable any ones you don't need. Windows 2k and xp come with a whole bunch of these enabled by default that you won't need. Judging by some of the other processes you probably have lot's of stuff in your systems tray too, try disabling any of these you don't need, most o them just act as shortcuts anyway so they're not much use and waste plenty of memory.

ccapp etc. are part of Norton.

You sould get rid of Norton its a system hog and it has failed and taking out my windows system files twice on me, and lots of other people on here.

Go to run and type "services.msc" this will give tell you what services are starting and what they do. None of these services are essential so if you disable the wrong one you will still be able to get into windows to renenable it. ;)

    .
    .

Have you anything that used the JRE? Seeminly a recent enough version has problems whereby it does not release the CPU or Memory after usage.. I have particular probs when I leave Azureus running on my machine for ages without a restart..

whats JRE? Also, what is a better alternative to Norton?

    Sun's Jave Runtime Environment..

The JRE will kick off if you hit a page with an applet and stay there until the browser is totally closed up. Be it FF or IE.

TASKLIST command is pretty good too.

    try tasklist /m
    or tasklist /svc
