PowerDVD Dolby5.1

    Hi,

I have the standard version of PowerDVD 5.0 and I would like to be able to play my movies in Dolby Digital 5.1 but PowerDVD doesn't appear to have this option without upgrading to the deluxe version. It has an option to output sound using SPDIF on the audio card. I have an Audigy z2 and logitech z680 spearkers(built in dolby digital decoder) but they are currently connected with analog cables.
If I was to connect them digitally and select SPDIF as the sound output in PowerDVD would I get dolby 5.1 sound? If not how can I do this without upgrading to the deluxe version, other software?

    Thanks.

I think Power DVD will only ever output stereo without upgrading to the deluxe edition.

You should get higher quality sound from a SPDIF connection so I advise using it all the time if you can.

As far as I know (it works for windvd anyway) when you select SPDIF in the player then the Audigy will decode the surround, if you select SPDIF Passthrough in the Audigy's properties then that will pass it on to your speakers to be decoded.
