RTE.ie alerts system gets clever...?

Um I've just had to enter a competition for a trip to Lapland just so as to continue getting email alerts from RTE news.
I think they thought they were going to get valuable subscriber information and be able to sell my address for spamtastic purposes but (I think) I fooled them into thinking I was someone quite other and anyway I instructed them not to spam me at all.
    Why did they bother?

Oh and why is the default age range under 18 when their terms and conditions say you have to be over 18 to participate - or did I misunderstand?

Anybody else use their very handy alerts sytem? Have I been conned?
