I was on a 6 month probationary period in my current job which expired last week. I heard nothing from my boss. Does this means that the period is over and that the probation is over and that the conditions there of are finished?

Ask him what the story is: "You happy with my probationary period or not?". If he is, then tell him you'll be expecting to sign a proper contract then...

Could be the guy's just busy and forgot about you.

Usually you have to sign something to say you've passed probation and will become a permanent employee

I don't think that in the current climate at my workplace, will anyone get fired, they are fighting to hold on to everyone.

Is there any precedent for this sort of thing?

Depends on the place - I've seen different kinds of contracts for probation. Best thing is to have a word with the gaffer or take a look at your contract.

I would definitely have a chat with the boss about it. Its the norm for you to
sit down a have a chat and air any worries/views you have on your current
position as you've now had a chance to see the job in full and whats required
on a day to day basis as opposed to when you were only a few weeks in the
job and really didnt know the place too well..

As far as I know and I may be wrong here, someone correct me if I am, when you're on a probation in a job, you're only entitled to 2 weeks notice if they
choose to let you go, but once this has passed its a months notice of whatever is in the contract.

Dont assume everything is ok until you've had this chat with your boss and signed all the relevant paperwork.

also is that not a very extended probation? I thought 13 weeks was the standard

6 months is the norm. My contract states that after 6 months they must give me 1 months notice.

If they have difficulty keeping staff then definitely go to your boss (pick your timing, when you are in his good books and he's not in a bad mood) and ask for that raise.

    People just forget. Remind them.
