    Hi,

    Just to do some advertising...

Gaelcon 2001, the National Gaming Convention, is happening in Clontarf Castle on the 27-29th of October this year. It's the biggest gaming event in the country and it features all the biggest roleplaying, wargaming and cardgaming games available anywhere in Ireland.

Far more information is available on www.gaelcon.com and questions can be sent to info@gaelcon.com

Hope to see you in October.

    Brian Nisbet,
    Gaelcon 2001, Convention Director.

ah now Lir i think you are taking this advertising too seriously and glossing the Gaelcon attractions too much.

i mean biggest wargaming is blatantly untrue as you can never have as much room for wargaming as the GW tournaments can.

the way i hear it no one has even submitted any LARP stories yet so it can hardly be the biggest in ireland.

promoting a games convention is encouraged on these boards but leave all the razzle and dazzle statements to the shameless ads on tv.

P.S. are people still gonna be moved to the rugby club around the corner this year ?

Well, this was just an initial plug, and I think it's a vaugely understandable thing to do as I want to get people through the door, however, there shall be no more razzle-dazzle.

Well, I wasn't aware that there were many big GW tournaments in this country, just the one's that happen in the shops, but I'm more than willing to be corrected.

But the point is that it's the biggest con which features wargaming, cardgaming, tabletop gaming and Larping all under one roof. Obviously a big event totally dedicated to one part of the hobby is going to be bigger than part of a multi-threaded event, I ain't claiming otherwise.

the way i hear it no one has even submitted any LARP stories yet so it can hardly be the biggest in ireland.

Not the case, not even close. We have 12 LARPs and 18 tabletop games confirmed and timetabled.

promoting a games convention is encouraged on these boards but leave all the razzle and dazzle statements to the shameless ads on tv.

I amn't trying to be too over the top. Gaelcon has used the phrases "Premier Gaming Event", "National Convention" and "Biggest Con in Ireland" for years, and, well, they're true. More people attend Gaelcon than any other con in the country.

That said, I honestly wasn't trying to start a pissing contest, so I apologise if anyone has taken horrendous offence at my language.

P.S. are people still gonna be moved to the rugby club around the corner this year ?

I'm happy to say that they won't be. The entire con, pub quiz and charity auction included, will be happening in Clontarf Castle.

    Lir.

gaelcon is pretty damn good lads.
last year was the first gaelcon i have missed since about 1994(i think) when i first heard about it.

its got a great atmosphere and is worth going to, even if your not a role player as such.

i might go this year, but counter-strike has taken over my life :/

bring on the pub quiz :)

anything special planned this year? the change of venue(again) was welcome and it was a nice venue at that but is nthere anything there that will make me say... yeah! that was the dogs b... and i dont need to finish that.

also might i offer a suggestion. get a cab company and tell everyone to use them and inform the cabs company that many a guest will be using them... basically i dont want to get ripped off AGAIN!

    cheers

Well, again, I say look at the web page (www.gaelcon.com), it has all the timetable info etc.

This year there will be a coach leaving Clontarf castle after the pub quiz and the charity auction. Two runs are entirely possible based on demand. Hopefully nobody will need to get a cab and once people have paid for the coach their journey into town will be quick and painless. The charge for the coach will be £3 a head.

Ah, yes, fair enough. The reason I mentioned the web page again is that there are four main areas, all with their own events...

We'll have new miniature games from Alternative Armies, we'll have the IGA National Wargames Chapionship Finals and one of the first Harry Potter CCG competitions.

We'll also have Steve Jackson Games' Men in Black demoing all the latest releases including a 3-D Frag board, Frag is a FPS board game and it's received excellent reviews since it's release.

We've also got the 3rd and final installment of the Athurian LARP which started with Once and Future King in 1999 and will conclude with Isles of the Mighty this year. While the story is ongoing you don't need to have played any of the earlier installments to play this game, medieval costume is not necessary but it is highly reccomended.

Hmm, what else, that's only a tiny sample of what we have to be honest and it probably isn't even touching the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Hmm, if you want to mail info@gaelcon.com and tell me what you're primarily interested in I should be able to give you an even more precise answer.

    Lir.

Been to the first and second GealCon but that was many (many) moons ago. Whats the age profile of those attending these days?

Very much a mixed bag. Depends what areas you're interested in too. A lot of the Games Workshop and Card games (like magic *spits*) have higher amounts of teenagers than the likes of the LARP's.

But as I said .. very much a mixed bag of ages, ranging from the oldies (30/40s) to the "I'm 11 and mum is with me" types

btw ... anyone who read my above post about Paul Feldwicks contact info, don't bother,..... I got it :D thanx anyway!

Thanks Lemming, If Lolth can be persuaded to go I may come along - been threatening too for a while. Last time I was there was 93 or 94. Heck, I may bump into some nerds I know...;)

I won't be able to make my way to it, other plans.

Sounds like great fun. I presume Magic: The Gathering Tournaments are held there aswell.

Double Curses! No 40k or Magic for Terran this year.
