It's my new standard to judge how bad a film is. Terrible plot, editing, directing, acting, story, effects. Not one redeming feature.

jeremy irons as one of the campest villans in christendom is surely a redeming feature? i thought he thought he was playing panto and was tempted to shout up "he's behind you!" at the screen.

The best film of all time has to be Night of the Twisters and on a lesser scale Night of the Twisters 2: Adventure in Huckleberry Swamp.

Truly great films much better than D&D the movie, Not that I've seen it.

the reason i asked this was because i think that it is close to being both.

as a 'hollywood' movie i think that it sucked. the acting, the casting, the story, the production was all bad. i could go into depth and nit pick at all the bad parts of the movie but i wont because i could be doing more productive things like pulling out my own finger nails. as a movie it is of woe... plain to see.

however, as a D&D movie, it was great. for thos of you who actually play the games... welcome to an on screen adaption of a classic newbie D&D gamng session. how many have fallen into the trap of actually using dugeons and dragons in their campaignes. most new DM use them because its easy and fun and the images are already there. the acting i was got me. when a companion dies the obvious thing to do is go and slay the murderer but was does our hero do... drops to knees and yells out (whilst making fists of his hands) "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!". in our regular seesions of D&D (if actual roleplaying is done) we ham act. ham acting is what we do. none of us deserve awards for our efforts (not including at cons). so, with that in mind, it is a great fantasy movie because it takes us through our usual settings and gives us a visual aid for when next play/write.

much like conan... i mean c'mon "the Tree of Woe" (JEJ voice)

    just some thoughts

Saw the film, and I game, I must say that alot of the jokes would only be funny to gamers, but as a whole the film was way too aimed at the young to mid teenage market to appeal to me.

An adaptation of the Baldur's Gate story would have been far cooler/involving. Keanu for the place of <enter your character's name here> anyone?

lol, picture the fun of watching him trying to act as if he was the child of a God....

i rented it out the other day the story line is cool but it dose not look like they went all out and spent loads of money on it. it looks a bit tacky 2 me cool film but

Note: Dont rent it from extra-vision (**** tapes)

I didnt think it was that bad, not that great either the budget did indeed look tight. but considering the lack of fantasy in cinemas i wasnt too harsh. That could change, lotr better be spot on.

And not just any God mind...Bhaal himself, the slain-by-the-now-divine-Cyric god...imagine the look on Keanu's face as he realizes the truth...

Seriously though- I'm with nesf on this one, I've gamed for ages and ages...and even when our groups were kiddie/adolescent groups we never acted as if we were explaining the situation to idiots- we just acted naturally. Of course we put on (very bad) posh english accents for our villains, and growling, rough undertones for *every* orc- but it still wasn't a Disney atmosphere. Limbs flew in combat, blood was spilled, bodies were consumed by fireballs, NPC's left bemused by Color Sprays...you know...

The film seemed aimed at a certain market, while still trying to appeal to gamers. If they'd gone all out for gamers, the film would have probably done a lot better at the box office imho.

one of the worse movies ever.
i was really looking forward to seeng it and im so upset at how bad it was.
and sooo short. it could have had so much going for it.
they had all these characters, and they were used for a whole 1 minute each. that dwarf fella, i mean he was a centrl character and i have no idea what his name was, or even if he said more than 2 lines in the whole thing.
looking forward to LOTR. hopefully it will not fall over and break its nose as D&D did

To put it simply.....RUBBISH frown.gif Should have been better even had some good actors but the story was a shambles. roll on december&LOTR

    too short

story line reads exactly like a gaming session.. ie. it jumps and skips.

    no continuity in it.

    no character developement.

special effects were great but very brief.

completely skipped sections that could have been decent (better than what was shown).. like the map and journey to the cave.

Cave was crap with a crap creature and a skeleton that came straight from goonies.

all in all a complete waste of time. Go and rent it. If nothing else, this will be the yardstick with the bit of poo on the end by which to measure all other fantasy films.

oh, one redeeming feature, some of the coreography for the fight scenes were quite decent.

Most worrying bit: they intend to make two more.

well i aint a huge d&d fan as only played game once or twice and have yet to install bg2 and 1 on my computer to play and finish smile.gif but did think that for a game that is so good and so complicated they managed to fu<k it up rightly and follow almost non of the simple rules . like the mages were utter crap where was the gigantic battle there was very little showing of the hatred between the different spiecies .

in short they could of done mutch better . i think ill go watch the cartoon instead that was mutch better .

what type of world will we live in when there is no world ?
