    Hi All,

Just wondering does this sound excessive(does to me!).

A mate of mine was just onto me, said he phoned one of the big computer shops (where he got the PC), and asked could they do a check on it for viruses, spyware, pop-ups etc.. they said no problem, and quoted him between 350 and 500 euro... I said I'd do it for him, but does this sound excessive to you??

He also told them he already has anti virus software on the machine... I cant see why it's soo much.

I'll do it for half that ;) download adaware from lavasoft.

I know, that's why I couldnt believe they were asking between 350 and 500.... even buying the software needed (if you had to) it should be nothing like this...

Just a tad. It's a one, maybe two hour job. If I was going to charge, I'd charge €50 at most (or €20 an hour), but for family friends, and friends of friends, I never charge anything past a homecooked lunch and/or a cup of coffee.

Agree with Seamus on this. Had a job like this last week and charged €50 for it. Only takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to do it.

That is a total ripoff! removing spyware is not difficult if you have the right tools ie HijackThis, Adaware, Spybot S&D etc.

Living happily in Linuxland I have no experience in trying to remove {ad,spy}ware, so I wouldn't knwo what to do, but if I did I'd do it in exchange for said person switching to Firefox. I read on a blog somewhere of someone who does thins kinda thing for free for friends, but he won't call round a 2nd time if you've use Internet Exploder since his last visit. :)

Thats a nuts price. I got norton antivirus with my dell 2 years ago and a yearly subscription was about €40 (cant remember exactly) and ad-aware is free, so that was me set up.

I was buying a network cable in a PC shop in fermoy and my friend pointed out the prices list. A reinstall of windows was something like €87, and €115 for reinstalling all the device drivers provided you provided the disks, and even more if you didnt. That seemed awful to me.

As for virus removal? Im on work placement as a system admin and we use trend officescan, and that detects and removes most viruses, but has a thing about viruses in the temp internet folders, so what i do is i use the free online scanner on nortons website, then simply delete the files found, and it works! Very risky, but i finish on wednesday so i dont give i siht
