    quite straightforward

There is a backing plate that is glued on which you will have to remove to fit the Zalman (ie heat the glue and it comes off easily enough....... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=184929&highlight=zalman

I dont see how the Artic cooler would make any difference to the CPU fan, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Dont all ATX fit the same?

no, for example most socket A's wont take big coolers because of the position of the socket on the board. Sometimes capactitors and other motherboard stuff get in the way of the big coolers.

no problems here...got a zalman 7000b cu on my k8n neo all i had to do was use 1 of them heat lamps, warmed the backing plate up and it pulled off within about 2minutes

Zalman then went on without a problem, its close to the ram slots and the agp slot but its not touching any capacitors or anything...

1)where is this ''backing plate'' and is it not a bit sketchy pulling it off?

2)if you had an artic cooler on your gfx would you reckon everything would fit?

the backing plate is on the bottom of the motherboard under where the socket will sit...its a plate that has 2 like..mount thingys coming up through to the top of the motherboard so you can attach the heatsink to it but the zalman has "nipples" provided these long brass things and if u attach them to the mouting holes the heatsink sits about..1cm higher that the chip so
the zalman backing plate doesnt have the mounting things coming it just has holes the same height as the base of the motherboard so lower..then when u put these nipples in and tighten it all up the zalman sits comfortablyl :D

i was a bit dubious about pulling the plate off but its only on with a bit of glue..it actually moved a bit without any heat..its glue or double sided tape..something like that..bit of heat warmed it up and i just pressed on the mounting holes down and pushed it out ...i hasnt damaged my board in anyway ...the only thing u could probably do wrong is push too hard and snap the motherboard..but i doubt anybodys stupid enough to do that so its completely fine to do

also im not sure how far out the artic cooler sticks out from the back of the card...my asus 9800xt only has a copper plate on the back like a couple of mm thick and its about 1-1.5cm away from the zalman fins...it should be fine as long as it doesnt stick out too far on the back..if your worried ill try and dig up a cam and take a pic of how far the card and stuff is away from the cooler :)

artic cooler goes down towards the PCI slots! how would that interfere with the cpu cooler?

If the cooler on the GFX doesn't affect the back of the graphics card, eg: It's flat, it will fit fine. Have one in a mates PC.

Didn't use the backing plate here, too much effort. Just took out the screws of the black rentention bracket, removed it, and screwed the heatsink directly into the stock backplate using those screws.

You kinda need to guess how far to screw down, but it's pretty safe. Just get both sides of the clip at 90 degrees to the motherboard so its flat, and make sure both screws are level. Doesn't take anytime at all.

the reason zalman provide DIFFERENT backplates and retention brackets is because it's too heavy for the stock one!!!

    It's the alcu one :>

And certain versions work with stock plates, even the cu ones. Redesigned nipples.

i thought the arctic cooler went on top of the gfx thus resulting in a space issue

No it covers the GPU which will be on the pci side of the gfx card. There is a "handle" on the otherside that secures the cooler but it isn't that large.

I will take of the plate and fit it as supposed to and see if there's any difference but I won't get a chance to do that fot a few days. Will post back results.
