Self Defence boosting confidence

    Hi everyone.

Something really interesting struck me when reading down through the thread "what matrial art?" where the topic of choosing a specific art came up.

I think no matter what art you do the best thing you can gain from training it is CONFIDENCE.

Now I know I'm only at MA a short while but already I see the benifits with regard to my confidence. I can even give a few examples.

    1. By doing TKD, it has given me the confidence to want to return to Third Level college - I start Business studies next week in Tipp Inst.

    2. It has given me the confidence to want to go forward and compete in the EU Taekwondo championship in Holland in Nov.

3.And I think this is an interesting one - It has given me the confidence to make peace with enemies rather than start arguements or fights with them. This is an important lesson I have learned from doing self - defence. Some months ago, while we'll say I was well jarred, i got into a fight with a guy that is around my brothers age (26) over a girl, Now this guy is quite tall, and as hard as nails.

Anyway, we've been giving each other looks, and passing smart comments over the last few months. But last night I was sober enough, man enough, and above all confident enough to walk over, and apologise. We then spent the night chatting and joking. He's actually a nice bloke.

Anyway, enough with the success story, but have any of ye benifited from MA in a simular way?

I do think that any form of defence does boost your confidence.
When you spar someone bigger, stronger etc and you know you can restrain them etc.... so when you do find yourself in unfortunate circumstances you can weigh up your opponent, who lets face it is usually drunk, untrained etc. That bit of confidence can make all the difference. Not only to defend yourself, but also to communicate, handle the situation without making things worse.
