Some hosting companies will give you phpbb preinstalled or an option to easily install it through a web interface. And no,it's not profitable. Generally your only motivation would be to provide additional customer service or if you had your own club you could let your members use it to discuss stuff (though they rarely do).

There are also a number of established websites that offer free (usually ad supported) boards.
    http://www.ezboard.com/ for example.
All you do is register and set up your forum, advertise it's presence (I do not reccomend spamming boards.ie looking for members) then hope other people will post to it.
They are not as customisable as the likes of vBulletin and phBB but are a good start as there is no need to pay for web hosting and you will avoid having to deal with much technical stuff.
In the unlikely event that your board becomes successful (just browse through these sites to see how many boards are abandoned) you can always move your board to a better system.

    Yes its easy.

Cheap depends on what you want hosting wise . They must support php and my sql . Some of the free hosts do, Tripod for example but have annoying ads that will put off potential members. PHPBB the software needed is free V bulletin the software Boards uses costs abou € 85 per year or €165 if you want to buy it outright.

Profitable That depends on you but there are possibilities in making it profitable.

Its definitely an interesting project to set up your own forum.
