just glanced over the story in the times, it didnt say for how long?

i think this is worrying precedent (esp for the us elections)...

my first thought was that it didn't even happen in australia, but perhaps malaysia(n's) and australia(n's) are closer then we think...

there were all sorts of dodgy goings on following the bomb in Spain, and although the bombing in Madrid led to the socialists securing a victory I hink the countries better off then having stopped the elections....

i mean when these terrorist attacks happen there all sorts of theories that it will help this side, but no, it will help the other side in a reverse way? so i think that you can't predict how it would benefit one side or the other.. and in fact in Spain it was as much the pp parties reaction to the bombing as the bombing itself that influenced the elction results

Seems to be in the free section: link

It's the political parties that have made this decision - it's not as though "Australia" has banned campaigning (though that's what the headline says). The leaders weren't going to be campaigning tomorrow anyway as it's the third anniversary of the 2001 WTC attack.

The electioneering will re-commence on Sunday.

A claim of responsibility in Jemaah Islamiyah's name was posted Thursday on an Internet site known for carrying extremist Islamic content. Its authenticity could not be verified.

"We decided to call Australia to account, which we consider one of the worst enemies of God, and God's religion of Islam," the statement said. "Here we were able to call it to account today in Jakarta, where one of the mujahedeen (holy warriors) was able to execute a martyrdom operation with a truck bomb in front of the embassy."

    Mike.
