Last time I saw them was on the tour when the original lineup broke-up, have to say it was one of the worst gigs I've been too, they simply didn't give a fupk, he was arrogant and didn't play a lot of their most famous tunes. I put it down to the band breaking up, i presume that he will be much better this time...

neil hannon is known as one of the most down to earth people in the music business... bands dont always play their most famous tunes.. they play what they enjoy playing. my cousin seen them a few years back and said they where absolutely amazing

That was a brilliant gig :D He even played My Lovely Horse. Ahhh I still have a grin on my face. I've been to each of their concerts the past few years... the ambassador, the gaiety and the olympia - and I've never seen a bad performance.

Strange thing was though loads of people there didn't know any of the songs or had bought any albums. So there I was - having bought everything from Liberation up, ( including fanfare ;) ) and I'm stuck on the upper circle, and then there's people who don't know a single word to a song down the front. Bleh. Should have booked before the day before the show  :p

Was at the Cork gig. T'was excellent.
Neil's a hell of a performer, without doubt the best I've seen. Met him after and got his autograph too :)

Which album is the best of theirs to buy, all-round?

The best of (a Secret History), is where I started. It can be had for €10 in some places so it's a great buy.

Thanks for the recommendation XCRichard, that sounds good. I've heard a few of their songs like Sweden, and the ones about lost things and peace in the North, and they're really unique, looking fwd to hearing more :)

I would have to say, I started on Promenade, and worked my way from there. Promenade is an excellent album, and I'd also strongly recommend Casa Nova, Regeneration and Fin de Siecle. I bought Liberation too, but didn't like it. I haven't bought the new album, but the bits of it I've heard aren't promising.

Thanks Civilian Target, is that one of their earlier ones then? I'll probably look for the one with the songs I know and start from there, that is, if they're all on one.. :)

Promenade was the 2nd full album & is the hardest to find. Casanova could be called the breakthrough album and is an excellent one allround, my fav alongside Regeneration.
