hello, i'm a new person that needs help badly!!
i reformatted my hard drive using fdisk, deleted partitions and created a new one , set it to active, now when i boot up i'm just getting this intel board page coming up! i tried to set it to boot form the cd but it won't. I can get in to setup but it won't let me modify any settings in there. I tried the drive in another pc, it gives up the c: prompt, but when i try to boot from a floppy it says ntldr is missing!! oh i'm going crazy, don't know what to do, any help would be really appreciated!!!

Ok I’ve seen this in the past on a machine I was putting a HD into, it’s a good while ago and I’m sorta rusty about Win 98 now. But maybe you might want to try some of these things that might get you sorted.

You say you formatted the drive using FDISK this prog is for making/removing partitions etc. on the drive rather than formatting.
After using FDISK the FORMAT command must be used to format the drive.

I’m thinking what you might need to do is access the BIOS SETUP of your computer. You’ll need to know the procedure for this as all machines aren’t the same, when you power on and you hear a BEEP you press DEL or ESC or maybe an F KEY your computer manual will have that info (at startup watch the screen and see does it give info on how to access the BIOS). If you can access the BIOS SETUP screen then usually you can set the boot priority to the CD DRIVE which if it’s rebooted with the Win 98 CD in it should give you enough control to FORMAT the Hard Drive.

If you Power On the computer even with no HD in it the BIOS is still accessable and the computer information should still appear on the screen

The other option I can think of is to get a boot disk, obviously you have access to the net so a quick search will enable you to download a boot disk that will probably have all the features you’d need like the basic disk commands and support for accessing the CD drive etc.

That’s all I can think of straight off

    Hope it’s of some help…….. :)

Boot up off the Win98 CD or boot disk

FDISK /STATUS will show you the partitions
Dir C: you should get a "data error" indicating it is not formatted

FORMAT C: /S format the drive and put boot files on it.

At this stage you should boot to dos prompt.

    Thanks for the hints guys,
i couldn't actually access the bios because the system was just freezing! i popped out the battery to reset the bios, and then i was able to tell it to boot from the cd, formatted like u said and everything is o.k.! Missing a few drivers like modem and display, but know what they are so it should be easy enough to get them

    thanks again for the help

    :D
