I decidd to give Mandrake a try out and during my usual wrestlings with network setup, I try to shut down my ethernet. ifup and ifconfig work perfectly, but ifdown tells me that there was no device found!

Okay, after trying various workarounds, I have a net connection...sorta.

dns will only operate while I'm logged as root-I browsed here via IPs-ifdown only returns "RTNETLINK answers: No such device or address" and bash won't let me ping unless I'm logged as root.

Granted, all of these problems probably boil down to something security base, but its a complete pain in the ass. Any help is welcome.

Have you turned off ipv6 ?
Not sure if it's what you're problem is but it's worth a shot.

I've never used Mandrake, nor do I intend to, but from your description, this seems to have nothing to do with your network setup, and everything to do with dodgy permissions. I mean, only root gets DNS and ping?! Your ifconfig shows that the right module for your NIC has loaded, so that bit's fine.

As you've only just installed it, I'd say the best thing would be to wipe it and start again - if you installed from CD-ROM, burn a new set to rule out any problems there.

Yeah, the same came to me in a vision after 16 hours in front of the PC and I must admit I was a little increudelous-I had it set to "standard" and it wouldn't even let me access my hard drive while as a user. I just pulled it in the end and stuck Suse back in my test partition.
