Getting random reboots with new pc

Getting random reboots with new pc, first happened the other day and just forgot about it but last night it rebooted 2X in about an hour.
It's a new build finished last week for my brother. He hasn't used the pc yet cause he's away.
I installed xp pro and sp2 (on his and my machine) and a few games and uttilities, no internet so i guess no virus.
Ran prime for a few mins and sys does heat up loads but no reboot, it happened once when using nero he second time when moving a folder.
I have to same programs on my pc and mine is oc-ed and have had no problems at all.
When rebooting into windows it show a recovery error, i assume this is normal or is it that windows is causing instability? (have a feeling setup might have crashed when installing windows)
    Anyone have any ideas?

What powers supply do you have, and what specs are the PC?

What temperatures is it getting up to?
overheating is the first thing that springs to mind, but then if you are competent enough to OC then normally you would know this so I'm just checking.

Is the PSU up to scratch? Random reboots could be caused by a PSU that can't handle the new components.

It's not being overclocked, crap board wont allow it.

Acording to abit's monitoring tool the cpu goes up to or over 50C, there's another sensor to goes up to 40ishC but im not sure what its for. I think its the mobo temp, it drops quick enough with the case open.

psu is a be quiet, aren't they meant to be good?? Cpu voltage does fluctuate between 1.68 and 1.7V again acording to abits tool.

    Spec is:
abit mobo (think nf7s2g, something like that s2g anyway)
amd xp 2500 barton stock cooler, stock speed
    512 mb pc3200 ram
    be quiet 400w psu

My own pc is similar spec, dif brand ram mobo and psu, its over clocked a fair bit and no poblems at all.

i dont think its a overheating problem, when i ran prime it was fine only after running prime it reboot.

    thanks for replies

Maybe swap the RAM and CPU out of yours into the new one for a bit and see is it stable. Could be dodgy or incorrectly seated RAM maybe?
Failing that, wipe the disk and re-install XP from scratch.
Are you getting any probs with SP2 on your PC, doesn't that give some problems, not sure if it causes reboots though.

I had a problem similar to that a while ago. In this instance it was a problem with the memory. I had a damaged 256mb stick in the boards.

I'll try my ram in my brothers pc, if it still crashes i'll install windows again.

Prob run mem test first see what that comes up with.

Do i have probs with sp2? No none so far.

    Problem solved (i hope).

Remembered how fussy nforce boards with ram and that my board only booted with the ram in a certain slot.
So i tried different slots, 1 didn't work at all the other seems stable.
Ran primes memory torture test before and after, before it only lasted 3 mins after seemd fine for 10 mins when i stoped.
Re-installed windows just to be sure that wasn't it.
    Thanks for all

Had a similar problem myself when XP came out, found that XP has a feature built in to reboot windows in the event of system failure. Once I had disabled this feature the problem was solved and the PC worked fine. I reckon it may be set a bit too sensitive. As I could find no faulty hardware or software.

To stop windows from rebooting automatically go into the System icon in the control panel - click on Advanced tab - under Startup and Recovery click on Settings - Remove check mark from Automatically Restart under system failure section.

Mazda, your problem was that something was triggering that reboot - probably the Blaster virus.

Blaster wasn't around at the time. XP came out 3 years ago. I find that if you disable the system failure reboot option only about 50% of PC's I have come across have a hardware issue.

These will show up with a blue screen or an error report which in most cases the fault can usually be identified. Whereas if the PC just automatically reboots it means having to dig around to find the issue.

But in about half the cases there is no fault, it's just windows being a bit moody

I think it was windows xp sp2 that was being moody on my brothers pc.
    It started rebooting randomly again.
Intalled xp without sp2 and we have been playing ut2k4 all day sinds whithout any reboots (so far anyway).

Thanks for the tip about rebooting, turned it of just incase it was related to the reboots.
