    hey!

    google are very rich right?

I was wondering how did they make of that money?

I don't see adverts on their website, they are a free search engine!

    then how?

    Thanks!

Advertising, mostly through sponsored links. Search for something like "Ad Aware" and look at the first few links.

    They do advertise.

Look to the right on most of your searches you will see a small list of sponsered links. They pay google to stick them there.

They also allow other sites to display google syndication adverts (think boards does this)
There whole plan seems to work because txt adverts ain't hated as much as banner ads :)

Yea, just check the top of this page... there's 1-2 ads by Google. Anytime you click on it the advertiser pays a fee to Google... and this is split between Google and Boards :) Great concept Google came up with these - allows non-commercial sites like Boards to generate some revenue to keep the site running :)

Also the txt adverts on googles own sites are not that annoying compared to yahoo, for example compare gmail adverts
    gmail_ads.jpg
to what you see at mail.yahoo.com when you login, which is more annoying :)

    aha!

so google hosts this ads, and the website that displays it get's it's cut for the fee that google gets?

    I'm sorry I'm a little bit slow now, I'm wearing a towel!

KDE are emulating this for Linux with their new filesystem. Supposed to be really hot stuff.

Maybe not KDE directly then, my bad, but I know that some crowd are working on putting in a Google-style filesystem for KDE. I'll have a gander around later for the link.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

And the new google mail will spy through all your emails and based on that, will dish out "appropriate" ads customised to you

    I don't care, gmail rocks :)
