ok my student account is through and ive just recieved my overdraft and credit card so look out internet sites

ok first up im into getting my server up and running

now im thinking ...storage..couple of 200gb's should do it and i may as well get some as they are only like £70 each which would you advise (im thinking WD?)

next up im gonna give my server my current dvd writer...as its only a 4x and doesnt support dual layer (i could do with that but it was bought a while back)

so im gonna get another drive for my main rig..i may as well get a cd rewriter as well since they are cheap (been a long time since ive had the pleasure of 2 drives), i need a couple of black ones to go with my black case...ive been thinking of the Pioneer 108 ..and as for cd writer...im not too fussed any will do

2 more things - my xp2000+ in my server has the stock heatsink on i think..well its a noisey bugger so im gonna replace it with a much quieter 1..can u advise me on a few silent cheap ones...it wont be overclocked or anything so ..im not thinking of spending much for that...maybe £10

finally - to set my server up (this im not too sure about) would i have to use this crappy 14" beige IBM monitor ive got lying around and another keyboard/mouse (this would be tough as im running out of room) or could i get a kvm switch (i sort of know what these are but dont know how they work)

so any advice on the hdds or prices...heatsink, optical drives and what to do about my server...

any ideas would be appreciated :D

theres lots of virtual PC things around, so a KVM isnt needed. U put the server for the app on ur server, then use ur computer to access it, and u see the server desktop on ur main rig screen.

Does the mobo support RAID? if so raid up two 120GB's...if not maybe source a second hand nf7-s v2 or something, would be money better spent then on a couple of 200GB's...would u use 400GB + the other 320GB in ur main rig?

Forheatsink go zalman and turn it down low. I'm sure they have silent coolers, not in the 'flower' range! I have NEC DVD writer, its good.

just starting at hull doing computer science with games development :D

well you see...i get £1300 now..£1300 jan and £130 april ...and im suppose to live off that..but im staying at home and i blow all my money on pc bits anyway :D

i spent £400 ish on the A64 bits..that comes out of my first 1300..but today! my student account came through with a £100 overdraft and a £500 limit credit card..i dont work im too lazy ill think about paying it back when it gets closer to the date when they want it back ..3 years away :D

so...its just spent spend spend at the moment while i still can .. ;)

as for raid...i dont know if that would be worth my time i dont know ..i was thinking maybe the 200gb hdd that ive got in my pc...i could replace that with a raptor ..i dont know if i realllly need the speed..but then put that 200 and another 200 or 250 in the server..i could quite easily get though..700/800gb the 320 ive got now im down to about 80..ive started to slow down using it now though holding out for the server :D

i dont think ill waste the money on another motherboard just for the use of raid tbh id rather have the storage....i reckon...Zalmans a bit expensive for a server dont you think..the 1 in my main rig cost £37..i dont know if my cheap server warrants that much for a heatsink! lol

btw as for the NEC i was looking at a 3500 or something? thats a new dvd writer by them aint it...yeh that was an option too...

Raptors just arent worth the money at the min...theres not enough difference to warrant the extra cahs for so little space.

I'm starting Computer Science & Software engineering on monday, but i'm far from spend spend spend!!

ah screw the raptor then :p it would have involved me reinstalling windows again anyway so im glad not ;)

im always spend spend spend..i have nothing else to spend my money on...

nec 3500 or pioneer 108..i just dont know... a new pioneer looked rather swish a08 or something wasnt it..but when u search for it..all that comes up is the bog standard 108...i think they both do the same speed and everything but the a08 looks sooo much better :D

what did u say i should do about my server again? about going through my main screen..how would that work?

u put an application on ur server, and then u put the controller application on ur main rig...then u connect the two together, and u can control the server PC via ur main rig, just like ur sitting infront of it.

If you are using windows 2000 server or later with xp pro you can just use Terminal services to remote desktop into it. Its pretty straightforward to setup and no extra thrid party software is needed...
