This is werid and the answer is probably very basic.Im just after putting in a new heatsink fan which meant everything in the board had to come out.So all went well, everything was put back in place (i hope) and i started up. After a bit of overclocking, i went into windows, again, everything was well except the sound. Its just not there! Now i thought this was because of the OC'ing but i checked again with my BIOS on the norm and still no luck. The other thing i did which may be the cause was i had to reset the BIO/CMOS as the overclocked settings i was uing would start up so im thinking this may be the cause, or is it somehting a lot easier and simple?!(mute isnt on)

    if its any use

    AMD 2500+ (oc'd obviously)
    A7N8x Board.

(ive also tried reinstalling all the drivers etc)

Ok, i might be able to help.
I was installing a new graphics card yesterday that has zalman passive cooler in.
I have an A7N8X deluxe, but i'm sure it's the same.

Anywa, there's an audio connection between the agp slot and the first pci slot.
I was under the impression that it was just for connecting the audio up to the front panel audio connectors.
But when i took it off as the wire was too close to the cooler, it stopped working.
I lost all sound but strangly my microphone still worked.
I thought it was maybe a driver issue to update drivers to latest nforce2 drivers.
    Still no joy.

Then i figured i'd plug back in the cable that was supposed to be for front panel and bingo, sound again.

I'm assuming it's maybe a similar problem for you.

If you've got the manual for your board, it's number 27 on the component location page.
It's page 5 in my manual.

onboard sound all OK in device manager.
I dont think its quite the same but i had a look and there is a black 4 pin connection with the same underneath it (in white), and i have a wire from the CD going into the black one.Is that what you are talking about?

if the sound card is there in device manger its probobly not a bios issue.

if you try playing a soud file (eg. mp3) media player dose it play or dose it give an error(I know you cant hear it but you can tell if the track is playing)

if you can play the file then i'd tend to agree with K!LL!@N its probaly a lose connection. posibbly located in a slightly diffrent location from his board.

No it's not the cd connector.

The one i had the problem with was an 8 pin layout with one pin missing.
It's to the left of the CD pin and up few millimetre's.

Yeah, it's a strange one alright.
Only it happened to me yesterday i'd never have known.

Can you check one thing for me?
Plug in some headphones into the front panel and then run the speaker test.
Basically it just says "Left" in the left ear and "Right" in the right ear, on mine they are reversed for some reason.
I'd be curious to know if you have the same problem.

If you're using the latest nforce driver you'll probably have NVmixer installed.
The speaker wizard is in there.
You don't have to go through the whole thing.
Just see if left and right are reversed then you can cancel.

If you don't have NVmixer, then you'll find nforce control panel in windows control panel.

It's not that important, i was just curious. :)

just checked and my speakers are fine, left is left and right is right.

you may have the Right and Left Front Panel Connections in the wrong place on that 6 pin conection you were talking about.Switch them maybe?

I have the problem now that whenever an audio app is playing (music games etc.) there is constant static over my headphones. It sounds like the hardrive, in static form! WHen i load up a program, there is static teamed with little beebs etc. its weird and very annoying. Like a crosswire with the hardrive or something.
