Weird XP Filesharing Problem

    Hey,

    Been having a strange problem with XP file sharing.

    Have 2 PCs connected via modem/switch. The network seems to work fine. When PC 1 tries to connect to PC 2 , username/password prompt comes up and all is well.

    The strange thing is that when PC 2 tries to connect to PC 1 the prompt comes up but the user field is greyed out. (see attached screenie).

    PC 1 has been formatted a few times and has had completely fresh installs with different PC names.. the strange thing is that no matter what I call PC 1 after a fresh install, PC 2 still throws up this greyed out box.

    PC 2 can connect to other XP computers without any problems..

    Have spent ages changing account options, share permissions etc.. no luck..

    Any idea what could be wrong?

    My only guess is that the only account created on PC1 for external access is the guest account. Or perhaps even this guest account is switch off and therefore not allowing access. WIth a fresh install of XP the guest account is off by default.

    Go to COntrol Panel > Users and create a new user account or activate the guest account and see if it helps.
    This can be done with more control by right clicking on My Computer and clicking Manage and then under 'Local Users and Groups'.

    Hopefully the above will help. SOmeone else may have better advice. XP tends to suck while networking though - tries to assume too much.

    Click Start -> Run -> secpol.msc -> OK
    (or Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy)

    Under Local Policies, click Security Options. Scroll down and look for "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts". Make sure it's set to "Classic - local users only authenticate as themselves".

    Hopefully that should work.
