    Hi Froggie,

As far as I know you need to take extra precautions for the first 2 weeks that you are on the pill and also if you change pill you need to do the same thing.

I am on the pill also and that is what I go by.

On my pill box it says at least seven days. And the same applies if you skip any day.

can I suggest ringing up the doctor who prescribed the pill and asking them.

Yes, that would be the SMART thing to do. But this is boards.ie! :)

It depends on what type of pill it is. To be extra safe, leave it a month.

Ring your doctor and read the instructions that come with the pill. There are different kinds of pill and they work in slightly different ways.

Normally when you start taking the pill for the first time, you start taking it on the first day of your period. Depending on how it reacts with your body, it can make your period last longer than normal as you adjust to the hormones you're now ingesting. As a result, you may well not feel like having sex like a rampant bunny immediately!

Still, phoning the doc and reading the pack are your best bets!

Yes as said above read the instructions that are in the packet. It is usually 7 days but can be shorter in some cases. 7 days to be safe though!

The pill won't work while you are on antibiotics, just so you know. Doctors have a funny way of not bothering to mention this for some reason!

Its a big "it depends" question (generally it depends on your cycle, health, the type of pill you take etc etc etc).

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't recommend going without barrier contraceptives for a month.

effective first day if taken on first day of perios. seven days thereafter

You have to work a week in hand. ;)

Personally I'd wait for one month or one whole cycle after starting to take it. The body is a weird thing and everybody's cycle is different. Err on the safe side. In comparison, if you come off the pill you wait a few cycles for everything to become normal again.

That's not true. If you had any idea of how contraceptive pills work, you'd know they need at least a few days to kick in.

Eh I do know. Read the leaflet that comes with marvelon, or any other of the new generation pills.

Me thinks froggie_1 is a bloke... so telling him to ring the doctor that gave *him* the pill is not going to work.... ;):D

Ask your local pharmacist. No appointment needed. Get your condoms for the most likely answer..... 7 days presuming that she starts taking them on the first day of her period.

Are you privvy to information Femodene, Marvelon etc producers aren't? :p Because the booklets with said pills say it's effective immediately.

it depends on the pill, some are, some aren't. Best bet is to ask your doctor or pharmacist, they should be able to tell you. or check the booklet, but I'd use condoms for a week to be sure.

I'd suggest reading the leaflet and if there is any doubt consult a doctor. Some are effective from first day if taken on the correct day (ie Day 1). With others (my pal says) you gotta wait 3 months! Anyone else hear of that?
