So in my job we have to keep 4 days holiday aside for the christmas period.
I have never worked in a job that makes you do this before. I was just wondering if this is common and do other people have to do this.

It's pretty much the norm in the professions (for example) or anything else in an office. You get Christmas Day, St Stephens/Boxing Day and new years for free (they're bank holidays and don't get taken from your holidays) but if where you're working doesn't open again until, say, after new years then you'll be off. And if you're off and they're still paying you and it's not a bank holiday they'll be wanting it out of your holidays. It'll be the same for any place that stays closed for that whole week, though obviously the number of holiday days required will depend on what day christmas falls on.

Ya, its a bit of a dose but we've no choice. We can't work if the offices close down..

I know in my place that these are called 'Company Days', which you have to take/are already allocated for you... But they aren't over christmas like you have explained.
