    Hi,
I want to design a logo. I want this logo to be small enough to go on a website and big enough to go on a car and other such banners. What is the best way to go about designing the original? should I design on the pc in a very large scale or is it ok to do it small enough for the site and then when I'm getting it put on a car they will be able to enlarge it without quality loss???
    Please let me know..
    Thank you!

You need to design it as a vector graphic.
That way you can scale it to whatever size you want without lose of quality.

Hi, thanks for reply. How will I do that so? What programme is good? does photoshop work? and if I was to get a design on my car, would I need to do it and bring on disc or could they get the logos from website etc?

There are a few programs that i can think of, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand and Macromedia Fireworks being the ones that come to mind.

You can maybe download the trial versions or get your hands on a copy from somewhere.

You can't make vector graphics in Photoshop.

The logo you want, is it going to be for loads of different things?
Do you want it on your car and then on letterheads or business cards etc?
If you do then having a vector graphic logo will allow you to scale the logo to the required size without losing detail.

If it's just for the car, then have a chat to whoever is going to be doing it to find out what format they'd need it in and what kind of resolution etc.
Perhaps you'll be able to get away without using vertors.

Maybe someone else will post some info for you.

your best using a adobe illustrator or macromedia freehand or even corel draw, vector programs... (i guess you could use paint shop pro?) you need to export the image as an .eps *,** and then you could email it to them or upload it to your web space so they could download that file?

    * of course you gotta be careful to flatten and save it properly?

*this are pdf woudl the type of image that could be access by others and scaled to any size

if you were to put the image on your webpage you would save your vector pic as a .gif

er i haven't explained it very well

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies. So if I want to design a logo about the size of the sketch attached for the site and have it big enough to give to a car label company I do it in freehand or any of the above mentioned programmes?

So if I take a photo of the deck of cards say, can it be enlarged through vector or does it have to be drawn?

    thanks:)

If you want a use a photo of the deck of cards, i'd imagine you'd be better off getting a really high resolution pic.
When you're enlarging photo's the quality can get bad, quicky.

If you want the logo to look like the pic you've attached, you should just get it drawn as a vector.
It wouldn't be too hard, and would allow you to scale it as much as you like.

Contact a graphic designer and pay them to do it. If it's a business you're starting, it'll be well worth getting someone who knows what they're doing. Company logos are among the most important tools in making an impact on potential clients and communicating your deadliness.

If you want I can create an .eps logo for you for a fee ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    Hi,
thanks for the offer. Have you got a portfolio of your work or any sample images? What kind of fee would you be thinking of?
    Regards

    Hey mate,

Working on a portfolio at the moment. My forte lies in designing art to transfer to canvas which I use vector graphics for.

Going by the amout of time I'd spend on it I'd say about €50. Let me do the design and if you don't want it you don't buy it ?

Thanks for the offer ErinGoBrath. I like the sound of it.

    This is open to everyone.

Whoever can please me the most with their design will be paid €50 if I choose to accept it. The attached picture is what I would like it to look like. Just the text and the cards. I want emphasis on the text and on the fact it's a shamrock in the cards. I want the shamrock to be an obious shamrock, there are a few shamrock designs I do not like.

Like: (I like #4 the best, it's simple and is the design type of a typical diamond, spade, club and heart image on a card, same design but not an exact copy of the image would be nice, I also like the colour)
    1

    2

    3

    4

    5

    Dislike:
    1

    2

    3

    4

So from these samples, you get the idea, an obious shaped shamrock and not too ugly or warped.

I would like the cards to look as real as possible, same distance from A,K,Q,J,10 to shamrock as there are on real cards to hearts, diamonds etc.

I only want the cards and text in the image. I want the background to be left blank so it can be placed over a background colour of the site/car etc. there is no need for a rectangular border, but I would like a border around the cards and text. Whatever border looks best, lighting etc?

This is the best idea I have come up with. If anyone can think of anything better, give it a shot and you could get yourself the money.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing the samples.

Ok, well here's my effort so far.
I've tried to keep to the design you wanted.
The cards can be manipulated however you like.
    Text can be changed also.
    Colour of shamrock etc.

    What you think?

    Hi,
Thank you for your effort but unfortunately I have to be blunt and honest and say I do not like it.

I am looking for something much more professional looking.

The kind of style and I want is in logo sample 2. The same size ratio between text and cards etc. I am looking for something that will emphasise the text more because it may be on a black background and if so, what you have done, the text will vanish. I would like a border of lighting or shadow or something else. I do not like the way the shamrock looks either and I don't like the spacing between the cards. I would prefer the cards not to be fully viewable, just whats needed to display the shamrock on the Ace and the KQJ10, like in logosample2. The shamrock #4 is the best shamrock picture I have found so please use something very similar.

I look forward to viewing more submitions.

    Regards

    Ok, that's fair enough.

I was working off of the logosample2, which had a white background.
    You never mentioned otherwise.
In any case, changing the text colour is a trivial matter.
You need to be a bit clearer about how you want the text highlighted.
How is a border of shadow going to help it stand out if, you like you say, it might be on a black background. The shadow will disappear into the black.

I can change the card size and move them around into the proportion that you want.
I can also remove the parts of the cards that you don't want visible.

I can have another go at the shamrock.
But i think i'll wait until ErinGoBrath posts their effort before i spend time on the shamrock.

Right I've spent some time creating a nice friendly vector shamrock that I think you'll like...

    AndyVectorShamrock.gif

Working on the cards right now. Let me know what you think.

Ok, I'm quite happy with the finished output on this one. I really think this would suit both letterheads and a web banner.

Let me know what you think

    EDIT: image removed

its alot more friendly, but i think you shouldn't have a drop shadow behind the shamrock on the card just behind the cards themself perhaps...

poker.ie i had look at the site, don't know much about business but i definitly think you've found a good niche but what are you making profit on re-advertising stuff?

i think as was said before (no offense to e and k talents) but if your serious about the business you should get an outfit that could design you logos, merchandise and website all together....

if this were larger project it would be considered bad practice i believe to ask a number of companies to do a load of design work and only pick one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭ErinGoBrath

I agree with you about the drop shadow Chewy, it's taking some of the focus of poker.ie, I'm not gonna bother changing it until cormie decides on weather he'll use it or not.

As for the site I agree that it's a niche market however for a customer to take your site seriously it must be designed professionally. At present it looks rushed and quickly patched together (no offence cormie). If your interested in a new makeover of your website I can do it for you. If not no worries.

Cheers for the feedback chewy, always on the ball mate

Hi, thank you for your attempt Andy but it still does not look professional enough to put on our website and especially on a vehicle. I like the font, it has a slight Irish feel to it. I do not like it green however. top_new1.gif I like the way the colour of this text is golden. It portrays money and for poker.ie it would also fit in nicely with the green and white.

I do not like the way there is enough space between cards to see shamrocks in the centre of the other cards, I would like to see a design the way logosample2.jpg is. If you can get the cards in the same position etc. It may look better without full cards like in logosample2.jpg.

I would prefer the text to be on the baseline (logosample2) and the peak of Q card to be the top. I would like to see a sample with a fully wide ace and one cut off with a border like in logosample2.jpg.

In your image Andy, the cards are about 3x bigger than the text, so I would like them about half and half like in logosample2, it emphasises the text more I think. I would also like more to be added to the actual cards, shadow etc.

When I talk about the border of light, I mean something like the border of light surrounding the aces here: empire.gif

Chewy, I agree with you regarding getting one outfit to design everything but unfortunately our budget does not stretch that far.

I look forward to more attempts.
Best of luck and many thanks.

just had a look at the website, having a professional looking logo won't help if the rest of the site is just a directory of banner adverts linking to affiliate schemes. the site looks like one of those annoying pop up porn sites imho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    Hi,
Thank you for your feedback. The site is about to be redesigned by a professional. It will have allot to offer the Irish poker enthusiast so please check back in about 2 months and let me know what you think then:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭ErinGoBrath

    cormie,

All those things are easily fixable and can be change to your exact specification however as chewy pointed out earlier I'm not willing to spend more of my time changing the logo if theres a change you'll pick someone elses last minute.

Best of luck getting your logo sorted, if you change your mind gimmie a shout and i'll finish it to your spec for the agreed fee.

I think you saw an opportuinity to get this done on the cheap, which is fair enough but you really need to decide exactly what you want the design to look like.
You might be better off hiring someone that'll sit down with you and get everything the way you want it.
I gave it a go, cos i've never used illustrator before and thought that it'd be a good start and maybe get a few bob as well but you don't seem to know what you want.

You need to decide where the logo is going to be used, what colours it'll be used on etc.
Saying it might be on a black background doesn't really help.

I don't blame Andy for not wanting to spend anymore time on it without a commitment from you.

Killian and Andy, yes I agree.

Thank you for your attempt Killian. I suppose you are right. It would be better to discuss it and pay one person.

Andy, I will let you know by tomorrow evening (hopefully) if I will give the job to you. Thank you for your efforts so far. If you can design to my instructions I will give you the job. I will let you know as soon as I do. I have to discuss it with my collegues.

    The competition is off.

Although suggestions are still welcome. I will have to decide on something very soon though.

Keep your eyes peeled on this thread Andy.

Thank you for your attempt dangerman. I have asked Andy to give it a proper go though and he is promising to satisfy my needs 100%.

What I like about your effort:
The slight glow surrounding the cards
The cut off point for the cards

    What I dislike:
    The simplicity of the text
The 1 instead of 10 on the 10
The size of the font (should be bigger)
I would prefer if the Q was the peak card

Thank you for your effor though.
