Flsy screen - brightness problem - common?

I have a 15" flat screen, When i use the s video in port it looks fine. When i plug in the regular analogue 9 pin(?) monitor cable, it is really bright and looks kinda ****e...is this a common thing? Is there a difference between a crt and a tft? cheers, toil
